Try to find Broardbean747s post on here. He's listed a definative guide to the XJ - also relevent to the XK of course - with dates and vehicle VIN numbers of the changes.
Here's a link to Broadbean747s posting. http://tinyurl.com/6psugh as it can be a bit of a pain to find.

The nicasil issue is probably not too relevent these days as it should have had low sulphur fuel for the last 8 years so if it's been running that long it's probably OK. I'd probably want to get a blow by test done to be on the safe side if it's still on the original engine.

Read Broadbeans thread and spend a hour or so browsing the PH Jaguar forum

Check very carefully for corrosion on the reinforcing plates on both sides behind the front shock absorber where the subframe V mount joins the body.

Budget a few hundred for a full fluid change - including the sealed for life gearbox and 'diff.

Listen and feel for any odd noises, hesitation or jerks from the gearbox.

Make sure the history is genuine and try to find a really well cared for example which has had all the tensioner / water pump / thermostat changes already done. Google jagads for the Jaguar Enthusiasts' club classifieds.

Don't expect to run one on the cheap - and don't buy one if it has been. Ignoring servicing or evidence of a hard life or abuse is usualy fatal. There are loads of bargains around at the moment but it might take some time and lots of looking and test driving to find the right car for you.
