boot unlock button does n't
Discussion
On my 2002 XJ8, I can open the boot lid using either the metal key or the boot button on the fob. However I cannot open the boot using the button on the boot trim. The button itself works (it conducts a current when pressed) but no voltage reaches it so it does nothing. Is there a control box somewhere which accepts signals (from the boot button or from the fob boot button) then sends current to the boot latch solenoid in the boot lid?
Otherwise my XJ8 is perfect!

Have a look at the wiring loom which is attached to the right hand side boot lid hinge - You'll need to gently pull off the grey trim cover first - chances are there's a wire broken where the loom passes over the hinge arm.
Do the boot interior lights work and does the boot open warning appear on the speedo face? If not then that's likley to be what's wrong.
Simple repair with a soldering iron will do the trick, but obviously make sure you disconnect the battery first. Loosen up the harness a little when done if you can - this will help to prevent it happening again.

You were absolutely correct. A cable tie held the loom to the hinge making the loom bend continually at the same point. The broken cable was completely snapped, even the PVC outer! Now it works. For what it's worth I found the same problem with an ABS cable near the rear wishbone on an XJ40. That too was repairable with a soldering iron.
