99 3.2 XJSport MAF Problem

Hello Everyone
I have a 99 XJ Sport. The car only seems to run if i unplug the maf sensor (get restricted performance mode)and constantly shows P0336. From what I read on the net it has something to do with the crankshaft position sensor. This has already been changed but no joy. The engine seems to be idling very rough also, I can hear a loud popping sound coming from the air filter tube.
