Been trawling around looking at potential purchases and have noticed that early (?) XKR's ('98/'99) are potentially within my budget at the moment. Had been thinking about a getting a X308 XJR but am now wondering if an XKR offers any gain in performance/handling over the saloon ?

Seems to be the same engine and output so am guessing performance and issues (Nikasil, timing chains etc) are the same ?

Is the premium to be paid for the XKR worth it in any way other than its a coupe and presumably rarer ?

Any advice/thoughts most welcome.

Same issues with the engines but if it's OK now it should be OK for ever more. Get a blow by test done to make sure if worried. Deffo get the latest tensioners.

I agree, early XKRs are a bargain, it all depends if you want the practicality of the XJR. XKRs aren't that exclusive, get a mint XJS instead!

The older XJR's looks have stood the test of time a little better as well!

XJR proper 5 seat saloon, XKR Coupe , better looking, but rear seats a joke for other than kids and occasional journey. Boot space is however much better than saloon. Both can currently be bought at bargain prices

The boot space in the X300/X308 cars depends a lot on whether you have the standard space saver spare or a full sized one. This affects the depth of the boot, I would guess that with the full sized one some people might find the boot a bit shallow. The other dimensions for the boot aren't small, I've had things in the back that don't go in the "er in doors"'s MB estate, without folding the seats down, the Jag boot is much wider. Basically the floor area is about the same as the average London flat. With the space saver spare then there is enough depth to stand bloody great 22" CRT monitors on their stands, or face down (they are deeper than tall). My suit cases will sit on their sides OK.
