Which five grand Jag ?
Discussion
I've always liked Jags, particularly XJ's, but I've never owned one. I think this may be the time to buy one, but I have a limited budget. I'd love an XJR, but I'm a bit scared of the possible bills, not to mention the running costs (I've heard 18mpg, is this about right ?) I can cope with 25 mpg ish, as I don't do many miles. Which Jags should I look at up to about £5000-ish ? I like the look of the XJ & S-Type but not so sure about the Mondeo jibes with an X-Type - should I ignore the comments and have a look, or are they best avoided ? I'd like something with adequate power, comfortable (I'm well over 6ft) and ideally not wallet raping to run. Advice or opinions greatfully received. Am currently liking the look of V8 S-Types.....

Changed X to S....Edited by Patrick1964 on Saturday 14th February 08:53
At 5K the X-type will get you the best purchase proposition. Think 3.0L V6 sport on a 53 plate with all the trimmings, 25mpg and the security of rear biased 4WD. The car will have FSH and won't have been to the moon and back. They are great cars, all the jibes are mainly borne out of pure ignorance.
If you are worried about what people think ---> why get a jag? Head straight over to the Audi/BMW/Forum with the rest of the herd.
PS If you find one of these V8 X-Types, let us all know, Like

I think you should drive both. There are some real bargains out ATM with 99 XJR's starting at £3.5k. For the sake of 8mpg instead of driving an x-type with the very good 3.0 v6, you could have the supercharged v8 and a proper XJ Jag. I see from your OP your not that keen on 18MPG but the supercharged V8 (377bhp?) really blew me away. You have a very nice car (x-type) and the XJR that some people consider when purchasing an E39 M5. The XJR is a BARGAIN.
Drive both, thats all i need to say. The XJR will put a grin on your face! Honestly drive one.

The bigger the Jag the higher the running costs
I would never consider the 3.0 V6 as I hear that mid 20s mpg is common and why not get a real one V8, I get about 21mpg from my XKR. The V8 S -type must be a bargain currently and would be newer than an XJ at the price. Try the S-Type R and an XJR IMO the higher fuel consumption is more than worth it

£5k will get you a really good X300 XJR or a mint X300 XJ6. Bombproof and a 'real' Jag, not some Mundano in drag.
Alternatively, it'ss get an average X308 XJR but your concerna bout running costs and reliablilty should steer you back towards the X300.
Not familiar about S-Type prices, but if it won't get you a good V8, then go for the X300.
I think I may be telling you to get an X300...

As with previous posts you really need to have a drive in the XJR. After that all the rest will seem a bit ...well.....pish.
I've drove a few different types from x to s to xj.....x300 x308 and x350.
An x308 XJR with full history is well within budget. Just do all the checks first. See broadbeans post on them. Who gives a doggy doo about a 4/5 miles less per g

Patrick,
I have had two S-Types, the first a 4.0L V8 and the second a 4.2L V8 SE. The second car I use daily and I got it as a demonstrator over 5 years ago. Great car. If you would like to have a chat about my experiences with both cars, send me an e-mail with you phone number and I'll call you. By the way as you seem a bit concerned about MPG, yesterday evening I did 120 miles some on the M25 and some in London and got a computer indicated 25 MPG.
By the way, only about 1 in 14 S-Types are the V8 so although they cannot be considered rare thay are just that more tricky to find than other S-Types.

About 18months ago I was talked into(by my wife) a 3.0 S type 2000 on an X that had done 110,000 miles by one very fastidious owner. It's a manual, which is supposedly a no-no when it comes to Jags. But,it does between 28 and 35mpg,if you keep the revs up has amazing mid-range pull and easily shows 150 on the clock. In fact the manual 3.0's figures are'nt that different to a non supercharged 4.0. It's currently showing 165,000 and all we've changed is oil and filters, haven't even changed the pads. In fact the clutch, exhaust and rear discs are the ones it came out of the factory on!
I think the moral of this tale is,the previous owner is the most important thing when buying any car, but especially a Jag.
Having said that,£5k would probably get an XK8 at auction.....
