Hi

Can anyone help me?

I have the opportunity to buy a 1996 XJ6, it isn't mint and would do well with a tidy up, question is, will the bumpers off the facelifted model (1998???) fit on it?

Does anyone know if this has been done before successfully?

Cheers

I'm fairly sure I've seen X300s with X308 bumpers on.
The bumpers were changed to cheaper ones because the original X300 ones, with the full width chrome strip, where prone to damage. Little car park kisses that the bumpers were designed to cope with would result in the chrome strip along the top lifting. Then you needed a new bumper, at £1500 a pop.
Be aware that the X300 bumpers are often locked in place as there was a problem with them be stolen to order (coz they were £1500). I got a letter asking me to take mine along to the main dealer to have this done.

I have a 1995 XJR with the later bumpers. I think they look well on the car. Less 'bling' and more sympathetic to the car's shape with the rounded indicators and reflectors. I'd be interested to know if you decide to fit them. Mine look like they could be tidied up a bit to make the gaps between pannels line up better.

Welcome to PH!

Did you fit the bumpers yourself? When you say they could do with the gaps tidying up is this because the bumpers need a bit of adjustment before they will go on?

I agree with you totally that the later rounder bumpers look better, I have never been keen on the square lights, they don't look quite right to me.

Cheers.

I just got the car a couple of months ago and the bumpers were on the car already. My guess is that they are a straight swap. Try calling a nearby indy (or even a local stealer) to see if it is a case of bolting the later versions into place. As with most cars a little bit of final adjusting always needs done to make them fit. My front bumper is fine. The rear is fine on the off side but seems a little loose on the nearside and this is what requires further inspection. I'll try to have a better look tomorrow and report back.
