Just did a price comparison search for the XK. I'm 29, 3 points, 1 non fault accident, in a suburb of Leeds with 5 years no claims and a garage. The Coupe was coming out at £598, which I was more than happy with, but the soft top is £956! Is this normal? I was expecting it to be a bit more, maybe £100-200.

Adrian Flux are gonna call me back, but does anyone have a recomendation for convertible.

I'm twice your age and benefit from a low-mileage discount but my XK8 convertible comes in at under £300 fully comp with More Than -- including protected NCD and a named driver... and I also have 3 points and a garage. Rural Berkshire is doubtless somewhat cheaper to insure than a big city suburb but I would still expect you to find cover for a lot less than you have been quoted.

Mainline,

I'm glad you started this thread and mentioned Need2Insure.

My S-Type 4.2 V8 SE insurance renews at the end of March. I have not had the renewal stuff from my current insurer yet but I have been concerned for a few years now about how insurance has got seriously expensive. Let me mention that as far as I'm concerned cost is not the only thing that's important, it's the extent of cover I'm interested in. For example, I want no hassle comprehensive cover when I take my car abroad which is not easy to get. Too many insurers say "yes" to cover while abroad whereas when you actually ask what they are providing all they give is rock bottom legal minimum cover in the country you go to, and some even ask for extra premiums on a daily basis and prior notification too.

So I contacted Need2Insure to get a quote. Right now Need2Insure are cheaper than my current premium by a whopping £400 and are almost matching the present cover I have; certainly their cover whilst abroad is good. The insurance will be underwritten by Groupama, a large insurer with it's HQ in France, and a significant UK subsidiary.

I've also been to comparison sites which always concentrate on price and leave cover details sketchy. I know I can get the premium further reduced but getting the cover details and the required cover in place at an acceptable price is a long process.

Once I have my renewal quote from the existing insurer and I decide on the final deal for the new policy year I'll post the results here.

just a quick tip for the unwary with regards to any insurance. i had my reminder in nov 08 and as normal just presumed it would renew unless i contacted them to maybe cancel as i pay by direct debit. then earlier this month i contacted them to advise of a number plate change. imagine my horror when the lady told me i hadnt been insured since nov 08 as i hadnt contacted them to renew/ they no longer do auto renewals, and to make matters worse at that precise moment my wife was hurtling down m6 in my new golf uninsured[talk about panic/stricken]

Following on from my post above, I've just had my renewal notice. The premium is a whopping £911, whereas I can get the premium as low as around £320 via comparison sites. I'm more interested in the cover provided than the price and the best quote for the scope of cover I want is £480, so I'm looking at a saving of £431. The only real loss in cover if I switch to the cheaper premium is the loss of cover under my current insurance for a driver if I am taken ill unexpectedly and am unable to drive on to wherever I'm going. Given that most passengers will have their own insurance authorising them to drive another person's car, this should not be a problem. Decision almost made up, methinks
