My 1995 XJS 4.0L is running great at about 100,000 miles. However, I was wondering, should I tune up/rebuild the existing AJ16 when the time comes or put in a 4.2L Jag V8 for the old girl? I know that such a move would render her "impure", just want opinions. I think the AJ16 4.0L I6 is an awesome engine.

I have to admit I've always wondered how well an XJS would go if given the supercharged version of the V8. It would be an interesting swap and certainly more true to type than the various V8 swaps that take place so often in the USA.

Stick with the AJ16 and get a 4.2 car as well. Probably won't cost that much more.

The AJ16 will probably last longer than the car.
Some of the people I've discussed them with have seem > 250K on them with little problems.

IF you could get it to fit, IF you could sort out all the management and electronics, IF you actually had enough knowledge, skills, time and patience to get it running it would almost certainly try to kill you on the first corner you took using all the extra poke.

Seriously... Stick with the AJ16 - you know it makes sense. Or if you must, stick the supercharged lump from a X300 XJR in.

Thanks for the replies. I was leaning toward keeping the AJ16, your opinions reinforce that decision. It does seem very reliable. smile
