Heads up - V8 ZF gearbox oil
Discussion
North Wilts Lubricants seem to have ceased trading - shame as they were the best value supplier of Esso LT 71141 in a sensible quantity for a single change.
Tr Achem are coming out at £107+ vat and delivery for 20 ltrs. That's enough for two 'boxes - anyone fancy going halves on an order, or getting a group order together and negotiating a better price?
I'll keep looking (I'm WAY too tight to spend a penny more than I have to) but that's the best price so far.

I'll share with you mate.
Can you also recommend someone to do a transmission service as well?

OK, will keep looking for best price. I'm doing my own change so unless you're planning to DIY too you might find any garage you get to do the work would prefer to supply the oil themselves - no prizes for guessing why - so best check that out before you commit to 10 lts of oil you can't use.I'll share with you mate.

Wyn Thomas could do an oil change, I was going to get them to do it for me but it's hassle getting the car over there and they have a hefty mark up on the Esso LT oil too.
I'll post when I've got best deal and see what you - or anybody else interested in the SE - wants to do - could be I can persuade some other supplier to split 20 ltr containers like North Wilts Lubricant did.
Right, here we go:
Esso LT71141 is also known as Lifeguard Fluid 5 and is used in varying quantities in several different 'boxes fitted to Alfas, BMWs Peugeots, and VWs. All the dealers for these cars stock it - usually in 2.0 ltr bottles, but at a big, big mark up. Cheapest I found was my local Pug dealer who offered me a discount on 10 ltrs which worked out at £8.68/litre inc VAT.
There only seems to be one UK stockist - Tr Achem - who supplies in smaller quantities. They can supply either a 20 ltr canister or a case of 12 1.0 ltr bottles.
Including Vat and delivery 20 ltr works out at £6.19/litre and the case of 12 bottles comes out at £7.22/litre. Last canister I bought from Tr Achem 4 years ago worked out at £3.38/litre
Happy to split a 20 ltr canister for £62 with anybody who's interested in collecting half of one from my home near Chelmsford, if not I'll go for the 12 litres. The 'box takes around 7.5 so that'll be more than enough.

For some reason the "e mail me" clicky is not appearing next to the "add to mates" clicky on my screen for anybody on the forum. So - (apart from the fact I might not actually have any mates on here... and that's why the mail me clicky isn't working) -

Could someone help a newbie?,on the Jag forum we have a similar thread going on, but one of the thread posters has been told the Esso oil isn't the right spec and the only oil is Shell M1375.4 (lifeguard 6) is this a marketing ploy or correct?.
The best information I have is the non-supercharged 3.2 and 4.0 V8 XJs and 4.0 litre XKs with the ZF 5 speed box need Esso LT 71141, which is also known and marketed as Lifeguard fluid 5.The earlier 6 cylinder 4 speed XJs and XJRs all use Dexron 111
The 5 speed V8 XJR and XKR supercharged versions also use Dexron 111 spec oil - although the J gate is identical to the non-supercharged cars in apperance they are fitted with a completely different Merecedes 5 speed gearbox.
All the aluminiumn bodied XJs, XJRs and later XK and XKRs fitted with the 6 speed ZF 'box need the Shell M1275 (aka Lifeguard 6) oil.
HTH
Well I've just booked my 03 XJR in for a service and gearbox fluid and filter change as it's done 108K miles now and my last xjr destroyed it's gearbox at 110K.
Cost of 100k service (the big one apparently) , about £600.
Cost of Gearbox filter and fluid, about £350.
So not a cheap in the short run option!!!

Shop around man... I got a quote for about ~£230 from a specialist in motherwell some weeks ago. Admittedly I've not had it done yet but he comes well recommended.
I fail to see why you should have to pay over £100 more!
I did try and phone around, the other dealer near where I work didn't bother their arse to reply to 3 attempts to get a price out of them and the local specialist I tried to phone seemed to be having a bad day and was so abrupt and disinterested on the phone in doing a service and the gearbox that I felt the only option I had was to go with the local dealer who was actually polite and could be bothered to phone back and check what I needed then phone back again with a discounted price.
To say I was dissapointed in the other two places would be an understatement, sometimes I wonder if these places actually want the work!!
I’ve just changed the oil and filter in my XK8 using the genuine Esso LT71141 which I sourced from Wessex Petroleum (Hythe near Southampton) www.wessexpetroleum.co.uk at what I though was a reasonable price of £111 inc VAT for a 20 litre container.
Obviously I didn’t need all the 20 litres, so if anyone in the North West Hampshire area wants to relieve me of half the container-ful then please PM me via the site.
(Hope this is not construed as advertising – if it is then I’ll be keeping the oil for the next change in another ten years….)
Whilst I was talking to Wessex, it transpired that they sell the full range of Esso and Mobil engine oils at prices well below retail - though you do have to buy 20litres at a time….
Usual caveat: NCJASC.
