s type v8 steering column wont disengage any ideas please

hi all i have a 99 s type v8 and when i turn the key in the ignition the steering column lock wont disengage and the car wont start but i can select the auto gear lever into drive neutral etc after i have turned the key in the ignition can anyone help please with any info or suggestions thanks in advance sean
