Had the car 2 years, faultless and great to drive; now it will only run on safe mode and the Jag dealer says it is a P0046 fault with bank B turbo, could be the the solenoid that operates the actuater ring for the vanes. They cannot test without stripping out the turbo and recomends if they do that may as well fit a new turbo and solenoid so looking at + 1600 GBP !!!

Anyone had this problem - any other answers out there?

From the code I'm assuming this is an early (X204) car, anyways, I'd make sure there are no boost leaks (loose hoses) etc before jumping on the turbo's, however turbo VNT failure is not unknown on these so it is possible that you will need turbo/VNT replacement.

Do you know if either have been replaced previously?
Has a Jag dealer or specialist diagnosed that it must be the turbo itself?
Those questions may not change the answer, but are worth thinking about and checking.

Oh and as a general rule VNT turbo's are best checked in situ, either by being logged on a running engine, or when visible being watched to make sure the mechanism is moves, this is often easier on a ramp, and not always possible with all car types...

During removal and once removed they are easy to damage...

THe Jag dealer checked it and said they could not clear the code, said it was on the bank that you cannot get to without stripping out the turbo

Thinking may just part ex for another Jag as the cost of repair would not be recovered on the cars residual value
