How does the auto wipe sensor system work?

It seems to have no rhyme or reason about when it workks when it's only raining a bit.
The screen can seem to be clear and the wiper wipes regularly and another time, the screen will be reasonably wet but nothing happens.

It was the same on the X type when we had that so am thinking it's just "not that good"

The E class Merc we also have is a bit better and more predictable but presumably works on a similar system?

make sure the sensor hasn't come away from the screen. i had the problem in the XK, it would only work sometimes, got the dealer to re fit the sensor. works quite well definitely better than the way the saabs auto wipe sensor works.
