Hi all, I am having a bit of a problem with a 2001 XJ. My father was waiting outside Asda for my mother and the weekly shopping the other day and decided to put the seat back in the reclined position and relax listening to the radio, all was ok, then he tried to put the seat back upright in order to drive home, but the seat wouldn't move!!! I suspect the switch as when it's pressed in the appropriate direction there is no noise to indicate the motor is getting power. Is this common or has anyone else experienced a similar problem?

ITs the fuse. Use the owners hand book to locate it, but its one of the larger amperage ones in the dash side fuse box IIRC.

What happens is the harness (wiring) under the seat can rub through and cause a short. Happens most often when a "larger" sized person sits on the seat, or when the seat is moved to an unusual position.

Correct fix is to remove the seat repair and reroute the harness to prevent it happening again.

However simply renewing the fuse will get it working again until you can be bothered to repair it properly, and most people leave it at that.

Ah Ha!! I never thought about a fuse!! I'm offshore working and my Dad was moaning on the phone about it!! You know what it's like when you can't actually look at something, sometimes you don't think straight!! Would all of the electric movement functions stop though? Are the seats individual as the passenger seat still operates??
