about a month ago I bought a 1997 XK8 with the gearbox down, on further inspection the engine had a knock at the bottom end, a friend and I removed the engine and box and stripped the bottom end down to find a tale of woe,the shells were badly scored so we decided to look for another engine which has now been fitted and running like a dream, it's not on the road yet as we're at the teething problems stage.

While it was apart I decided to do the tensioners and guides but this wasn't as easy as it sounds, the new engine is out of a 2001 XJ8 and there are loads of differences, the biggest being the cams and Variable valve timing gear, all this had to be swapped, even the bottom engine casing was different as the 1997 has 2 oil cooler pipes that go in at the front, in the 2001 engine they're just blanked off.

The good news is I now have a lot of parts to sell to recoup some of the money i've spent, the 97 engine had been loved up until the last owner got hold of it.

The block is like new, at some point in it's life this engine has been stripped and the block has been replaced for a steel lined one, the bores are steel and smooth as silk, I also have the pistons which have new rings fitted, I have the heads, 2001 cams gearbox and torque converter but the gearbox is spares only.

Does anyone have any idea where the best place to sell these would be, if anyone has a good early engine with the nikasil problem I have the parts to fix it and I bet they won't be cheap from jaguar, what would a new block be £2000+ i'd guess

I'm confused.. why didn't you just swap the engines over?

Surely a 2001 engine isn't that different from a 1997 one?

I probably didn't word it well, I have swapped the engines over, sitting side by side they look the same and although the differences are subtle the only two parts that were the same were the cylinder blocks

what i'm looking to sell is the 1997 heads and block,i've now had a better look at the block and can see why the engine had problems, at some point in it's life it'd been run low on oil, the shells had given up leading to excessive con rod play which is where the knock came from, the clearance between valve and piston must be very tight as this play has allowed the valves on one cylinder to just touch the piston, this has put a chip in the top of one of the liners but it won't affect compression as it's above the level of the rings.

I also have the 2001 inlet manifold and injectors, cams and VVT timing gear and the gearbox and torque convertor but the box is suitable for spares only as it's goosed and the rear mount is broken.

Well i'm feeling slightly happier now, i've just rung Jaguar and my XK8 hasn't had the throttle body replacement, I had until 30/6 to get it replaced and it's booked in for monday , on the flipside I just had to pay £30 for a litre of transmission oil

Sorry if I misunderstanderate you, Jaguar are doing a warranty fix on a 1997 XK8? I thought they had been taken over by Ratan Tata, not Mahatma Gandhi.

that's correct, the car is booked in at Jaguar for monday, they say they're going to put a new throttle body on it but it has to go in by 30/6 , there's a problem with the car though, it's only firing on 7 so I may not make it , according to honest john it's just a spring in the throttle body that it needs
