gear box oil change
Discussion
Tell us if it is a R or an 8 as the R has a Mercedes 5 speed and the 8 a ZF 5 speed. Then you need a proper set of ramps as to refill the car must be level and running. If you want to empty the torque converter you will need a pump because there is no drain. Do not buy the oil from a dealer, nor let them carry this out. I used an independent, much cheaper. You do not say if PM which is good or you have a gearbox problem you hope to solve ?

its a XJ8 model
Which XJ8?Someone will need to confirm that though because I'm a reckless copy and paster...
I read his "r reg" bit firstly to imply it was a 1998 plate and then again to imply it was an R- model.
How terribly retarded of me.
ETA:
That'll be a 1998 plate XJ8 X308 then Nige.

As above, there is no dip stick or fill tube like an old school auto transmission.
You have to fill it from underneath, first you fill it until it starts to trickle out with the engine off, (will take about 3 liters ish) then you start the engine, the level drops and you then continue to fill until it trickles out with the engine running. (i think its 6 litres) but its been year since I done one.
You are supposed to fine tune the level with the oil temperature at 45 degrees, but failing to do this means you are ever so slightly overfilled at not a big deal at all.
Without pictures its hard to explain, but the filling/level bung is towards the rear of the gearbox but on the right hand side (drivers side) and just above the sump level.
The oil used is special stuff and its kinda golden or brown in colour (you can get it from your local Jag dealer). IT IS NOT THE RED DEXTRON III, again this is for old school autos.
A giy who post on here "Jaguar Steve" has posted a cheaper supplier before but I coulnt find it, worth searching thought the forum with a tad more pacience than I had.
Good Luck.

Since North Wilts lubricants went bust, TR Achem are the cheapest supplier of Esso LT 71141.
It's available in 12x1 ltr bottles or a 20 ltr drum.
You'll need between 6 to 7 litres. You must make sure you get a replacement o ring for the filter - it's listed as a seperate part and not supplied with the filter.
You'll need a high speed pump of some sort for the second stage of the gearbox fill. I modified a washing machine pump and put the oil in the fridge overnight to buy a bit more time before the critical temperature was reached when filling.
