Hi, have read all the palaver involved in doing the normally aspirated 8 box, can someone confirm that the merc box in the R8 is somewhat simpler? and can it be done without any special merc tools?

I've seen things in the forum earlier about MB having this gearbox down as a 100K service item, I think someone even once gave a reference to an MB document about this. Has anyone got the details of this, only the Mrs has this box in her Merc and when it went in for a service just before it's 100K miles were up I asked them about the gearbox oil change and the service manager said they are sealed for life... don't need it. Now I know they DO but it would be helpful to have the MB service reference to this, I want it doing on her next service.

Much easier procedure than the ZF 'box, and it takes normal Dexron 111 fluid too smile.
Filters and gasket kit are available from GSF far cheaper than Jaguar - just tell them what MB the 'box is also fitted to - but you'll need to buy a dipstick from your Stealer or specalist tool supplier.

Drain old oil, remove sump and filter, clean up sump pan, fit new filter, refit sump. No need to faff about with having the car perfectly level either.

Locate the filler / dipstick tube underneath the plastic trim at the rear of the engine bay.
Pour in about 4 litres then start the engine and add another 2 litres or so and cycle the gears once through the gate then put back into P. With the engine still running check the level fairly quickly and top up if necessary before the oil has a chance to warm up - if you are quick you can use the first cold level mark.
