4.0 V8 AJ26 to AJ27 are the flywheels different ?

I have a 1997 XK8 which has had a 2001 engine put in it by my mechanic but it's not running right, very rough and not firing on 4 out of 8 cylinders, it also shows a cam to crank sensor fault, I've been told on another forum that the flywheels are different which will affect the timing , can anyone confirm they are different and if so how as the 1997 starter fits the 2001 flywheel soit can't be a different diameter or it'd need different gearing wouldn't it

Thanks

It is not the gearing (so outer ring), the difference is in the hole pattern on the back (side to the engine) where the crankshaft sensor reads the crank shaft position.

so it's just a sensor position issue not a mechanical issue, thanks for that , I really appreciate the quick reply

another question, so having the wrong flywheel on will cause the ECU to issue the wrong signals which is what makes the car run roughly, would changing the sensor for the AJ26 sensor make any difference

Unfortunately not, as the sensor gets triggered by the holes, and as the pattern is different it will not have the effect you are looking for. Sorry but you need to exchange the flywheel.

Thanks again Andre, I was hoping that the box wouldn't have to come out but I think you're right

+1 for AVOS's call. I had the same issue once when parts supplied me with the wrong flywheel. Engine runs, but pops and bangs and is all over the place. Changed the flywheel, and all was well again.
