Hello, I currently own a TVR Chimaera 400 but i'm getting rid of it due to too many bills and lack of go. I've got the opportunity of a buying a very reasonably priced xk8. Performance i'm not too bothered about as i will get a superbike, it's more the reliabilty issues. I understand that there were engine problems, is there anything else to look out for. I've always liked the look and presence of the cars
Pre 2000 MY - waterpumps and thermostsats, throttle body recall, just possible still Nicasil problems - especially if it's been a weekend toy all its life
All cars - secondary timing chain tensioners must be upgraded to metal bodied type ASAP. Extended service intervals allow timing chain wear and stretch and chronic engine wear. Dispite being "sealed for life" it's essential for gearbox and 'diff oil to be changed or they will fail at as little as 60k, Serious internal corrosion - see other recent posts on here.
These are big heavy cars which will wreck suspension, tyres and brake components if driven hard. Check for heavy wear on inside front tyre edges. Rag top needs actuating oil change and flush. Seats wear heavily. Handbrakes prone to loss of efficency as some people never use them.
Lots of cars prone to irritating squeaks and rattles from trim. Some aspects of Fit and Finish and component quality on all 1997 - 2003 Jaguars falls far short of what you might expect from such an expensive prestige car. Very prone to stone chips on bonnet and bumper - if none suspect respray. FSH is an absolute minimum, I'd want to see far more oil changes than 10k intervals on a high miler.
Don't expect a limousine ride quality but engines and transmission should be silky smooth and almost silent. Feel and listen very carefully for hesitant or jerky drive take-up or gearchanges or odd vibrations through the steering wheel and floorpan or noise periods at certain engine loads or axle hum. If any evidence at all just walk away.
Check out Honest John's (Telegraph) for a model guide.
Look very carefully before you buy and check everything works. Many shabby examples are massively overpriced IMO. I'd suggest trying to find an enthusiasts' car that's been really well looked after even if it means paying top money or compromising on colour. Try the JEC classifieds.
