If you look inside the boot at the boot lights, they look suspiciously like the side repeaters and they are clear. I don't know if they might fit the wings.

I shall take a lookie, ta.

How does one get the wing mounted ones off - are they a clip fit?

Yes, just a clip fit. Push against two srings at the top or bottom (depending on which way the thing has been fitted). That will allow you to prize out the 2 lugs that catch the opposite end to the springs. I've just looked at the boot lights and although they don't have the springs, they do look like the same unit. If you were able to prize off the springs from your old orange lenses I'm sure boot light lenses would work. You can have a decent peek at the boot lights on your car by holding the boot lid carpet away from the lid. Don't try to pull the bootlights out....I'm sure they are glued. I'm sure XJ40s came with clear lenses at some time. If true, that might be the easier option.
