Thinking about an S type
Discussion
In my father's experience - and his may just be the exception:
Fuel Injection System Failure
Brake Servo failure (once at 3 years old, once at 4 years, 5 months old)
Handbrake failure
I also know of an engine failure but that was on the TDV6 engine.
Edit: Forgot to mention it's on its third gearbox too - the post below reminded me!
Fortunately all work has been under warranty/extended warranty)

eLex,
I had an S-Type 4.0 V8 SE for three years, and I've had my current 4.2 V8 SE for over five years now up to around 85000 miles. Both have been great cars to live with.
By far my largest problem has been with a succession of gearboxes in the current car. Had rear wheeel bearings fail too, heater valve replaced, and one or two other minor work done. I have a copy of all work on a spreadsheet which I could e-mail to you.
I also have a copy of Jaguar World's article in April 2008 about buying a used S-Type.
Send me an e-mail with a request for any information if you wish. Also let me have a phone number and I'll call you to discuss my experiences if you like.

First S was a diesel SE 54 plate, I took it from 37K to 84K with just a knackered heater valve & 1 or 2 odd suspension bushes. This S is a 2.7D Sport 56 plate 15K to 34K & it has had an elelctric window switch. NOwt else although the first one had a gearbox squawk which was a Jag TSB solved by adding an oil additive to the box.
I do know someone who is on his 4 box though. Bloody crap German technology as BMW & Merc use the same box & are having similar problems.

Tametech's post is a reference to the well know lurch that affects this gearbox which is fitted to Jaguars, Mercedes and BMW products. All three brands have been similarly affected.
My successive gearboxes problem was nothing to do with the lurch but was all about weakened internal seals which are aluminium and originally not up to the job, until Jaguar improved their spec. I've had three gearboxes replaced for the same reason, all under warranty and without any push back from the JMD I use nor Jaguar UK.

elex, see my post above and take the action I suggest if you would like more info direct.
