Apologies to the mods if this is a double post from my series2/3 thread but thought it best to start a new thread as it's about a different model now...
O.K. on the advice of some of you on this very helpful forum, today I've driven a 4 litre Daimler Six and frankly it was lovely.Simply wafted along, quietly smoothly and without fuss.It looked like it may have had the odd bit of paint, its done 100K but it's had only 2 owners of 7 years each, and the seller is hoping to contact the last owner to fill in the recent gap in the service book ( The way it drove it certainly hasn't been neglected, maybe owner maintained).A few things to ask the informed
1:Anything model dependent to the Daimler six to look out for?
2:Is this model likely to become more of a classic than others of that era?
3:The dashboard vents were a bit wobbly,common/easy fix? The Air-con worked fine, but the dash vents were not moving as one on the spindle.Could live with it but as I'd have to look at it all the time it might become annoying!
Not going to rush in as there's also a 3.2 litre Sport that looks promising elsewhere, but I'm now sold on a X300 straight Six to waft me to work!

I had an X300 XJR and the vents are easy to knacker accidentally. I have used British Parts before (I'm beginning to sound like a sales rep for them on here!). They sell lots of bits including vents: http://www.britishparts.co.uk/.sc/ms/dd/ee/2451/CE... I am not sure if the Daimler you are looking at is supercharged like the XJR but my diff developed a knock early on and expect to go through a set of tyres every 10k miles (heavy engine at the front and power at the back eats them up) and suspension bushes often. My review from a couple of years back is here http://www.carsurvey.org/reviews/jaguar/xjr/r10606... but again, not sure how relevant to Daimler (Hi Fi probably uprated in Daimler?)
I have a 4 litre Sovereign, bought at 120k.....now done 320 k..It has been one of the best and most reliable car that I have owned. Had it 5 years. It has been cheaper to run than my previous Citroen XM !
Love it. In my time done rear shocks, front suspension bushes, water pump, heater pump, several sets of pads & discs and a 2 front wheel bearings.
Mine was converted to LPG at 80k
Look for rust on rear wheel arches, and around windscreen, other than that bodies are usually ok. Check rear bumper is secure......they used to fall off, but most have had modified brackets. Parts are not too bad, lots of specialists, and lots of s/h around.
The Daimler is by far the best choice, probably cost almost double the price of the 3.2 when new. The 3.2 feels sluggish in comparison, and the trim/spec is far better in the Daimler.
I think the really good X300/Daimlers are holding there price quite well, but a well looked after one will be better than a cheap low spec one that rattles and groans.
I also have a nice Bentley Turbo.....which I am about to sell , the Jag is a much better & nicer car !
Good luck

Thanks for the replies so far. I'm sure I read somewhere that the auto box on the 3.2 isn't as good as theat of the 4.0ltr, is this correct or just "opinion"?
Do we think that a Daimler Six would hold it's value ( what's left of it) better than say a 3.2 sport?
IIRC the gearboxes on the 3.2 and 4.0 are different, the 4.0 benefitting from electronic control. Do we think that a Daimler Six would hold it's value ( what's left of it) better than say a 3.2 sport?
Hard to predict which will hold value better, and what sort of value you mean. With old cars there's value to yourself and value to somebody else which are usually different - value to yourself comes from buying the very best you can find, maintaining it well and keeping it for several years, thereby minimising depreciation as well as getting the full benefit from the cash and time you invest on maintainance.
Value to somebody else is nothing more than the amount you could sell it for when you next change.
If I had to choose I'd say - all other things being equal - go for the Daimler due to its rarity value.
Well how very odd.The Daimler Six I mentioned in the original post I ended up refusing on the basis that the last stamp was 7 years ago, and the trader had only managed to located 2 invoices of work done since by a general garage adding up to not much. The car has now re-appeared at another dealer for 1500 quid more with full Main Dealer history.......
