My father inlaws X308 XJR (1999) brings up the fault light whenever he tries to use the cruise control.

The cruise control will not work and whilst the check light is displayed the rear brake lights are constantly on (but not the high level brake light) in drive and reverse with the brake off.

I've heard people on here mention an obd reader in the region of £20, can anybody recommend one in particular?

I got one from www.talktomycar.co.uk for about £60 I seem to remember. An invaluable tool, it will read the fault codes (if any present) and provide a brief description of fault.

You can also 're-set' it to turn off the check engine light, but of course, it'll come back if you haven't repaired the fault!

Good luck. smile

I got one of these
http://www.amazon.co.uk/CAN-Bus-Trouble-Diagnose-D...
£23.98 + delivery

it is the cheapest of the cheap, but it did allow me to gather codes and clear check engine light, 2002 X308 XJR. It only comes with the "generic" codes, for a complete list, make a donation to Jag Lovers, http://www.jag-lovers.org/ and you get access to all of the Jaguar "specific" codes.
