Anyone know where i can get some at a reasonable price? seem like everyone wants to charge 300+ quid a set which frankly is a bloody rip off when you can buy em for Fords etc for £60, a spring is a spring after all in this case. I'd rather not get the grinder out if i can help it but i'm not paying £75 each for some coiled up bits of spring steel.

It's a mater of quantities

Jaguar buy them by the 1,000 and have the clout to get them cheep

I don't expect that there is much call for special springs for the XJ40 so maybe only made in the 10s or so
For the XKRs there is a call but even then you are looking at arround the £300 mark

I've just had a set made for my XJ40 XJ12.



They are from a company in sheffield called 'coil springs 1989 ltd' (google them) who can make springs to order for anything you like. They make springs for F1 teams, WRC teams, road/race/classics etc. Just tell them the make/year/model of car and how much lower and stiffer you would like it.
£195 including VAT and postage. Absolute top quality, can't recommend them enough.

Oh, and don't get your grinder out! See how the top and bottom of each spring is formed with the coils touching and then ground off flat. They will never seat properly if you just hack a coil off.
Also, you need a jaguar special tool for the front springs. You can hire one from the JEC although I made one from 15mm threaded bar with a small bar welded through the top of it and ground to shape.
The threaded bar passes up through the bottom spring pan and then two lugs on the top engage into two notches inside the upper spring seat to allow you to release tension off the spring when the bottom spring pan is removed. Be very careful, these springs have been known to punch through concrete floors if they break loose!

Cheers, i'll look into that, i do reshape the end of springs when i chop em, i have an oxy setup so i can keep heat very localised and i regrind a flat on the end but i'd prefer to buy them anyway as i can decide on the rateing then. I 'll bear it in mind about the prongs, looks a bit like the Merc speciale tool for getting the narrow front springs out of some of their models, i have a fairly small set of comepressors but if they dont fit on a car i usually drop the bottom of the suspension off and realse them gradually that way. pics help a lot anyway so thanks. smile
