I was wondering if anyone knew of the procedure for the above? I know the old oil has to be sucked out, is this an easy job for the home mechanic? and are any special tools required?

Thanks guys.

You'll have to suck the oil out of the filler hole. If you have the sport suspension version the rear anti roll bar has to come off for access to the filler.

I use an industrial vacuum cleaner, a modified plastic petrol can and a length of qauter inch tubing. A more sophisticated method would be to buy an oil extractor - try a yacht chandlers - most boat engine sumps are buried and oil is often changed in a boat by sucking it out through the dipstick tube.

Clean round the filler hole plug and remove it with a half inch socket drive. Access is a PITA so scrounge or steal as many different lengths of extension bar you can get your hands on. Change the oil when hot, it's less viscous and even the EP 90 that will be in the 'diff flows quite well when warm. You may need a pre bent piece of metal pipe to get right to the bottom of the 'diff. All you need to do is suck out the old oil and refill up to the filler hole. Filling is much easier if you use another length of pipe and a funnel taped to the side of the car rather than groveling about underneath spilling oil all over yourself.

Capacity is 1.9 litres. I use Morris lubricants full synthetic 75W/90, but any GL5 EP 90 will do.
I change every 25k or so - that's a lot less hassle and much cheaper than fitting a new 'diff.

Whilst you are underneath with the car safely supported it does no harm to give the 4 grease nipples on the driveshaft UJ's a few shots of grease until you see clean grease emerging round the flanges.
