Hey Folks,

I apologise in advance for asking yet another what's it worth, but am struggling with parting with my much loved xk8. Looking through autotrader and ebay, the prices vary widely for no obvious reason. Also, am in a bit of a dilema as to how much to prepare the car for sale, vs having an honest vehicle.

Details are, it's a 1997 xk8 coupe with oatmeal leather, the 'moden' alloys, 120,000 miles and a full jaguar service history. Only 2 owners from new - myself being the last having had it for 4 years.

It's had the expensive timing chain tensioners done (at Jaguar) and i'm not aware of any other electrical or mechanical faults with the car. All works as it should with no strange noises.

But.. wink

The window trim strips have suffered from the dreaded paint flake and so are showing the bare aluminium in places around the windscreen.
There's a small bubble of rust appearing on the drivers door sill (hasn't broken the paint yet)
I foolishly left a newspaper on the back seat in the winter last year, and it got damp and so has discoloured the base of part of the seat.

I've struggled to fine a decent touch up option that works on ally for the window frames and the local garage has advised that to replace the trim is a windscreen out job, so is the best part of £200 (with replacement parts)

The rust and leather repair is most definitely beyond my personal abilities to repair, but I suspect taking it to a professional would seriously eat into the 'value' of the car. Both are a shame as the interior and exterior are otherwise spotless.

..So.. any thoughts as to whether is better to fix and add some of the cost onto the asking price, or to sell as-is. I was offered £3,500 part-x for it for a new car, sounds a little disappointing to me, but do you think that would be my best bet?

Any thoughts much appreciated,

Cheers,

Mark

The 120K miles will put the ill informed off , and big V8s are still not very popular. Put it in the classifieds here and at the Jaguar forums. Early 8s should get around £5K if they are in generally good condition with full service details , tensioners , gearbox oil etc. I have only seen cat D and damaged cars at £3K. Might not be a quick sale though.

I agree with the above

Should have gone to a good Independant Jaguar Service
You are being ripped of by the dealer, to late now but an Indy would have done the timing for half the price.
Also you don't have to take the windows out the remove the trim for a paint etc

Take it to a indy to do the bits that will put buyers off like the trim and seats

Where are you in London, I know a very good Indy to the west of London allong the M4
He may even know of someone who would buy your car

If interested eMail me and I'll give you his detailes

I've been looking at XKs of late and I'd suspect that £5-6k is where you'd want to pitch an advert.

If you can wait till I'm back my hols at the end of Jan I'll beat the PX by 50p.
And a tube of smarties. Can't say fairer than that eh?
