Hi all ,as above.

My BMW 120d auto is terrible.Had to abandon it in a side road outside my friends.Watched cars go up the very slight gradiant with no problems apart from mine and one other ,a BMW 3 series.

Jags are rear drive as well ? The run flats on my car are bad enough normally but in this weather, useless ,really ,really useless.

My Jags aren't going anywhere at the mo. The Mrs MB is horrible in snow. I know through past experience that the XJ6 is next to useless on packed snow/white ice. A couple of years ago I got it stuck on a very gentle hill (I'd never noticed there was even a hill there before). It didn't quite have enough umph to go up it on tick over but any throttle opening would just spin the wheels, still I could push it up on tick over on my own. Big grippy summer tyres are just hopeless in these conditions in rear wheel drive cars. If "global warming" continues to give us icy winters like this then we'll all need to end up owning a set of winter tyres like they do in many other places. That makes a huge difference. Still not perfect mind :-) a few years ago I rented a V8 T-Bird in Chicago in mid winter, that was a total hoot, speedo could go from 5 to 55 in a less than a second as the wheels let go. Acres of snowy car parks (parking lots) to play in and car that had more torque than traction on a good day.

My S-Type 4.2 V8 is a dead loss in the snow, so the wife's 15 year old Ford Fiesta goes out to play. It seems to cope with anything. I assume it's the combination of front wheel drive and modest power from its 1.4L engine, plus being manual.

The wife likes to remind me about the Jaguar's uselessness this weather!

I think the skinny tyres help too.

Pah, the XJ8 wouldn't even reverse off the bloody drive!

So I've been using the Smart which is ace in this stuff - no pendulum effect whatsoever.

and skinny tyres with the engine over the wheels too. smile

My XKR is coping fine in the garage but asked for a blanket - it is cold out there after all biggrin
OT I've been on nights for the last three days and followed the gritter home in my humble Laguna oil burner, and each morning not one ounce of grit has been spread. What are they playing at!! Skimming the top of the snow doesnt help much to be honest mad

Mine's fine, under a blanket of snow, not moving anywhere until SOMEONE grits the roads, also the pavements would be nice if the same someone gritted them too, just had to walk an hour and a half, not kidding, up from the station on treacherous pavements, because the roads are too dangerous for PSV's, which is fair enough, in this nanny state. I am just glad my boots are waterproof and grippy enough that I still have all four limbs intact. I wish there were some grit bins around here and then I could help clear the back roads, but there is none nearby and the ones I passed walking tonight, were padlocked, FFS !

She is handling beautiful (XKR), traction control off, it is great fun bounce

Thanks to winter tires (which already perform better than summer tires from about 7 degrees Celsius, so no snow needed) they make a huge difference, and also the lsd helps good.

It's not. Combination of a quiet road that's never gritted on a steep slope with a sharp bend at the bottom and half a dozen cars abandoned at the bottom of the hill means the XJ ain't going anywhere and if it did it'd never get back.

Woefully underpowered FWD desiel van on skinny tyres is my weapon of choice, and it's got a better heater too..

My X Type 3.0l Sport Manual has been adopted by my girlfriend for her 15 mile commute. That AWD system is very, very sure-footed in the snow. This leaves me with a choice between my 30 year old Landy or her company Toyota.

Landy wins by a mile!

I managed to get home from London last night in my XJR on roads of sheet ice. There were a couple of hills I had to give up on (one of them I would have made it if I hadn't had to stop for somebody else), but in general the softly, softly, keep the momentum approach works if you're disciplined enough.

I passed many cars which really should have coped better with the conditions, but their drivers were simply being too aggressive with their inputs.

You mean the argument "I'm not going so accelerate more" doesn't work?

It's impossible to drive my '99 XKR with summer tyres on the snow! Really scaring and dangerous, impossible!

My XKR on summer tyres is my daily driver and only car (apart from '65 Mustang) so it has to cope. It's fine if you take it easy, think ahead and concentrate, and try not to stop on slopes, slow right down to a crawl instead to conserve some momentum, and take extra care when pulling out of junctions to make sure you have straightened up before applying power. At least it has traction control etc smile

It worries me actually that fwd and 4wd cars that can gain traction more easily are often driven too fast to actually stop or go round corners if conditions are worse ahead. Also that someone will come to a T junction and find they can't stop in time and end up straight into the oncoming traffic (already happened just up the road). I'm far more concerned about the probability of someone else doing something stupid than having a problem with the XKR myself.

An uncle I was talking to yesterday had driven down in his son's Range Rover because he said his own 4x4 was proving useless.

Our x-type 2.5 sport awd has been an absolute godsend. Hilarius watching everyone struggle and looking at me gone out as I pass. Not many people know about the AWD. It saved us in Feb and it's keeping us going now!

Had problems getting moving after coming to a stop, luckily everyone was helping push to get people moving. As usual
if you can keep moving it'll crawl along. Now got "check engine" light up, hope its just a couple of miles with
traction control working flat out has confused things and it'll reset itself when I go and get it

I must be REALLY lucky then cos I've had no problems getting my XKR in or out of Whiteley or up and down Leafy Lane (YET!!!), but half an hour after me those roads are jammed with stranded cars in the rush hour. Seeems that once they get stuck in traffic they just can't get moving again tongue out
