About to order the new XJ and not sure what options to add to the list. I have gone for a SWB,Premium Luxury, 3.0 diesel, Liquid Silver Met with Jet interior.

Options I'm thinking about are: Dual view function, Heated steering wheel (personal choice), Privacy glass. My main concerns are the resale value after a year so only want to add what would make it a desirable vehicle when it comes time to sell. Any thoughts on above spec or do I need to add anything?.

Personally I feel any Extras will not put much extra value on a second had car

But will make it easer to sell when the time comes

And you're buying a new XJ during recession? You can't be *that* bothered about depreciation!

Think I'll stick with what's listed above as the Premium lux is a nice spec anyway.

Personal taste and opinion of course but privacy glass or excessive rear window tinting has no place on such a distinguished cars options list IMO - it's firmly associated in my mind with brainless Celebrity wannabees, urban Gangstas in stolen Mercedes and purple stretch limos that smell of hen-night bucks fizz and vomit.

Sorry to say I think it looks awfully vulgar and pretentious no matter what the car - I really do. I certainly wouldn't even think of buying any car, either new or secondhand that had it fitted.

I would have though going for the derv car would have given much better ROI come resale time.

Valid point Steve, it was certainly a sticky point for me and one I was not to sure of. As I previously mentioned my main concern is resale in a years time so I'll probably drop the privacy glass.

Another thread reckoned that the car looked better painted dark due to the black C-Pillar?.

The C-Pillar could be sprayed if really disliked in future years - part of styling signature IMHO - it's a separate component. Agree about the comments on the glass though.

That's a good decision IMO - Privacy glass is tacky automotive jewellery for footballists and Celebs.

I've always liked darker, stronger colours like BRG, greys and reds on Jaguars. I love the way that different qualities of light are reflected and accentuate the curves on a dark coloured XJ - it really does make the car look special IMO. I've not had a really good look at the new XJ yet in different lighting conditions but guess the same thing will apply - some colours work for some people and others don't.

If I was buying a new XJ I'd order what I really wanted for myself, chances are if you're selling in a year the car will still be so rare and exclusive that the colour - providing you stick with a reasonably conservative choice - will make little difference to your resale.

Any thoughts on percentage loss over the first year (car comes in at just under £59,000).

Agree that dark colours in general look best ...when clean. But they do show dirt, dust, scratches and chips much more than the light colours, imho. I have had carnival red and dark blue XK8s which required constant attention to keep them looking clean whereas my latest silver model looks clean for weeks after a wash.

I'm not sure if all Jags use the same light coloured primer but mine did and any scratches or chips stood out like belisha beacons against dark paint whereas they hardly notice on silver.

Hmmmm, tricky one. After 2 yrs no matter it's a new model will be 50%. 1yr, between 20-30% is my guess.

A new XJ - good choice. I've not seen one in the metal yet but I reckon it will look striking.
I considered one myself before getting an XFR instead.
Options wise, I agree about no privacy glass and like the sound of dual view.
I prefer dark colours on most jags but also think silver works - but would need to see how this looks with the black c-pillars.
Depreciation will inevitably be very heavy - expect to lose at least 15k in the first year so make sure you think it's worth it!

I think you are right but equally I am sure that Ian Callum is deliberately using 'criminal' references to get a bit of an edge. So the question is, is he right.

Well, the bottom line is he needs to design cars to sell. If he recons that that's what the Jaguar customer wants then obviously he's got to provide it. The Press release mentioned the new XJ had been deliberately given an aggressive edge to it's styling. Pesonally I wouldn't want that either - I don't feel the need to own an aggressive looking car and would actually feel quite uncomfortable about it - but Jaguar must be really confident there must be several potential buyers that do.

Depends on the economic climate in a year, you will lose a minimum of £20k, potentially £30k

IMHO, the new XJ is a far better looking Jaguar than the XF. I want a Supersport, but at £90k it is way too expensive. I'll get one after 3 yrs, me thinks.

Personally, I think the privacy glass would look the biz.......

Lucky you ordering a new Jag! Personally, I would not get the privacy glass on this car. It also makes it look a bit like a chaufeur driven car in my opinion. I like privacy glass on Range Rovers and similar 4x4s, but not on a Jag.

I'd definitely go for the dual screen - it's got a lot of press and I think people will ask for it come resale time. Otherwise, I guess they come pretty well spec'd.

In terms of depreciation, it's never a good thing to think about with these cars. However, this is best limited when the car is a new model, as with the XJ. Why do you only intend to keep it a year?

How long before the car is delivered?

You really reckon that much? I know there is no benchmark at the moment but the nearest one is maybe the XF and it's 2nd hand values are still quite strong.

I collect the car in April as I was told that's when they will be released? I change my car every year and presently have a BMW 5 Series Touring but really fancied something different.

I think you have to consider a 30% minimum drop in year one a reality, you would never an expensive Jag privately so will be dependent on a dealer offering you a good price. A very decent used current shape S class Merc for £30k or a used XF would be a much better home for money if you only intend to keep for 12 months.
