S-Type 2.7 diesel - opinions sought!
Discussion
I'm thinking of getting one of these to replace my trusty old 2001 3.0SE petrol version. It would be my first diesel, but the extra mpg would be useful (current S-type does about 27mpg)
I've seen a 2004 model that's just the right colour combo with 97K miles for a shade under £8K (dealer, unfortunately). I'm planning a visit tomorrow - is there anything I should be looking out for, or is there an alternative model I should consider for similar money?
Also, what's the road tax per year please?
Many thanks!

My father had a 2005 model for two years. He did approximately 30,000 miles in it (before upgrading to an XF).
He averaged 34/35mpg over that time - and I'd recommend going for a "Sport" (even if only for the de-chromed look). His was ultraviolet blue and was lovely, a great car to drive and passenger in over both short, and long journeys.
Road tax was £215 P.A. but from April that will go up to £245 P.A.

Road tax is £215PA I think. No real problems, bear in mind that 2 belts need doing around 145K which are around 3.5 hours each & that will be expensive, around £700. Check all the electrics work & doors lock/unlock properly.
At that mileage some of the bushes will be starting to die & affect the ride & handling. And although not expensive it'll soon mount up.
Brakes will likelyy be due a pad & possibly discs as well depending on how & here it has been driven.
Mine returns a consistent 35MPG as did the previous diesel.

Thanks folks - useful info and encouragement.
This is my everyday A-B car so I'm not worried if the ride softens a bit, but I'd like to avoid replacing half the front end if possible!
The extra 30% mpg will help to pay for any work though

I got done with my current S-Type for 'excessive play' at the front - MOT failure and thanks to the brilliant design, something to do with different metals corroding together, two whole new uprights at about £350 a corner... I think (hope) they improved the design by 2004...This is my everyday A-B car so I'm not worried if the ride softens a bit, but I'd like to avoid replacing half the front end if possible!

OK, I have an offer for p/ex but I'd be grateful for opinions on what it's actually worth (anyone with a Glass's Guide?)

Earlier note on this thread stated '2 belts need doing around 145K which are around 3.5 hours each & that will be expensive, around £700'.
Is this correct? If so it's great news as I thought it was due at 105k
Based on the high cost (Jag dealer quoted me £900, so £700 is probably about right through a good 'non main dealer'), I was planning on moving the car on before 100k!

Regard the 2004 model, yes the uprights are different. (I take it your going auto with this one too) The gearbox is made by ZF instead of robbed from a ford explorer, so it should last longer, but can lurch into 1st as you pull up, not really a big deal. As with all S types, Make sure the boot isnt full of water under the carpet by the battery.
Electronic park brakes can drag ever so slightly and wear the rear pads out a lot quicker than a proper hand brake would. Audi's do that too actually, why we need electronic hand brakes is beyond me.
Give it a good road test, at some point pull from very low revs right up to the red line a few times (dont let it kick down it needs to go from low to high rpm) This will work the variable vains inside the turbo quite hard, it will into limp home if there is anything wrong with the turbos.
People complaining about the intermitant gearbox lurch, the odd pair of Turbo's and people putting petrol in them and knackering the pumps were the only real problems, but I left before they were that old.
Is basically the same platform (subfram suspention etc) as all the newer Jags, If I could find a cheap manual one, I'd consider it. But I could get a VX Manaro for that money.

Holy thread resurrection!I now have a 2006 2.7D and the cambelt change is 105K miles, if that's what you mean? I had mine done a few months ago at 101K miles.
