Been a fan of big Jags for a long time so I finally took the plunge and bought a lovely X300 this weekend, its the straight six version, sovereign spec.

All I can say is what a mighty car it is, I cannot understand why anyone would want an S-Class, 7 series or even an A8 over one of these!

I've had my XJ8 (X308) for just over a week and have to agree. The comfort, ride and looks are just much more majestic than the Germans!

The only problem I have now is wanting an XJR even more!

Personally I preferred the XJ Sport to the XJR when I was drove them at the dealers. He was hoping to "up sell" me to an XJR and who was I to argue when offered one to test. The Mrs' said she'd never drive if I did (idea perhaps not such a bad plan) and the salesman said his wife wouldn't drive them when he could the demonstrators home.
The engine was awesome but I felt the suspension was a little harsh. I'd just parked my GT4 in a ditch and was looking for something different.

For me it had to be the XJR, nothing else comes close

Apart from the obvious power difference the biggest issue I had with the 3.2 sport was the gearbox. The XJR gearbox was vastly superior in smoothness and was a joy where the 3.2 was notchy and lumpy; almost like a BMW SMG1 eek which has to be the worst gearbox known to man.

On mine the gearbox is very smooth, even smoother then my AMG, it did recently have a fluid change perhaps this helps

I would agree that the gearbox is the poorest part of the 3.2s but mine is certainly not lumpy, notchy or rough. But it isn't as good as the autobox in the Mrs' MB which is the one the 4.0 V8 XJR uses. Everything else about the Jag is better though.

Lucky you!! I've been after an X300 for ages, but the wife is making it very difficult for me. Apparently we have other priorities. Been looking on usedjags.com, they get some nice ones. I will get one someday.

Nope, I'm sure she's got that bit wrong.

to make the gearchange smoother on a 3.2 x300 is a very simple job . it is caused by the kickdown cable going out of adjustment . a very simple 10 min fix . although a fluid change is advisable if you dont know the history it should be done every 30k anyway.
