Hi All,

Thought I'd ask this here as I'm bound to get a good answer from the knowledgable folks here. smile

My XJR gearbox is starting to irritate me now. It's done 120K miles and the change from 1st to 2nd and back etc... is getting more clunky, more often.

So after checking the cost of swapping out with my garage yesterday, I'm on the hunt for a second hand 'box.

The question then is, will any ZFhp26 box from any 4.2 XJ8 or even XK8 fit? There's a few around and I think they will fit but I really would like to check if the supercharge engine had anything different about the gearbox? Obviously it'll be re-flashed as part of the swap anyways.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Has it ever had an oil change? Poor shift quality was usually a first indication that the oil in the previous incarnation of that box was well beyond its service life, dispite the fact that it was supposed to be a sealed for life component.

An oil and filter change may be worth a try before you condem the box and go to all the expence of replacing it

Hi Steve,

Yes, it had new fluid and filter at the last service about 10K ago, along with a re-flash. I was hoping that would help but it didn't. My garage diagnosed it last week and couldn't find any fault code other than "Gearbox Failure". So without them stripping it down they can't really offer any advice other than they think it's a mechanical issue.

The box actually has three issues. The 1st gear to second gear 'lurch/hesitation' - probably 75% of the time.
Occasionaly hangs onto 1st gear for far too long, before slamming into 2nd - about 5% or less
Very rarely does this bad enough to make the gearbox error out and go into limp mode - once a month.

Thing is, it's starting to do all the above a bit more often and it would appear to be a cheaper option to just change the box out than it is to have the existing taken to bits and fixed.

My man is estimating £250 to swap a box + fluid if required. So if I can source a decent enough box I should be able to get it done for around a grand.

Just need to make sure I get the right box smile

Following on from your second post could be the just the valves, (due to the oil not being changed soon enough) they can be replace as a unit.

Again follow my eMail

So can anyone confirm the technical cross match of the zfph26 boxes used across the 4.2 v8s?

It could be just the valves. But how much is getting valves checked/changed likely to cost?

My experience of owning jags over the last 20 years is that you can try this, you can try that, then maybe this as well, all the whilst the issue is not being found.

Mine has done this since I bought the car with 90K on the clock. So it doesn't exactly make it undriveable, just a bit irritating at times.

I'd rather just swap the whole box out for one with a way lower mileage and be done with it.

Cheers

P.S.

In summary, I'd rather spend a bit more now and have a low mileage box with low mileage bits , then spend probably not far off the same amount to end up with a 120K mileage box with a nice set of valves on it. Does that make sense?
