I was at my local JMD last week, and while there discussed the non appearance of the new XJ with the sales manager. He confirmed:

  • the original first delivery dates were November 2009
  • this was deferred to March 2010
  • then this has been deferred to July 2010.
The problem is with some critical software glitches, apparently.

Well, July is what he told me...maybe he's hoping I'll be back if they arrive in May (no chance!)

I went around the production line last week, and there was a problem with the Bluetooth, but its fixed now.

They are waiting until May before they launch the car world-wide. With so many custoemrs all over the world, they want to wait and launch them at the same time, not have a luanch in this country before that country, before them etc etc

Consequently they are making about 100/day, and rapidly running out of space to store them. They were parked everywhere! And its comforting to know that each car already has an owner- they only make cars to order, not for stock.

I was surprised how many XF were being made per day too. A good sign of a healthy company, making desirable cars.

It was aslo interestign that the tour guides could pretty much tell which market the cars were going to just by looking at the engine:

The petorl V8 would be either Russia or USA
The 3 litre Petrol: China
The Diesel for the European markets.

There were exceptions obviosuly, but he was amazingly accurate!

My experience of them and I've had two now, both with full main dealer histories, is that they are fragile and unreliable.

I soooo wanted to enjoy my XJ8 and when it runs well it's alovely car but it's just such a prissy prima donna that fails at the slightest opportunity.
And the X type was simply a pile of cack.

And I know I'm not alone in that experience.

There's a reason why Jags depreciate faster than a falling tree...

Well that hasn't been my experience.
Am I lucky or are you unlucky?
My XJ6 is far better built than my E-Class Merc.

As for depreciation, well I've had mine for 14 years, so I'm not fussed, but for the first few years the X300s actually had very good depreciation records for the class. But then they were up against cars like the 7 series. A mate swapped a totally shagged Disco for a low mileage 7 series because the dealer just couldn't shift it.

I think all big petrol cars depreciate faster than "economy" models. Most second hand customers are more cost sensitive than most new car buyers.
When we bought the Mrs' MB we had been looking to buy 2nd hand, we really wanted a 320CDi but second hand they were over budget, so we were planning on trying to find a 430, cheaper, or at least no more expensive than a 320 petrol on the 2nd hand market even thought they were hugely more expensive new. Fortunately for us the rip off Britain campaign was in full swing and MB slashed the prices so the new diesel was cheap than the 2nd ones had been going for (talk about instant depreciation!)

I'm not unlucky.

We bought a new E class in 07, it's done 60k now and has had no issues whatsoever.
None.
Nothing at all.

I bought an X type on a 54 reg and it broke it's steering pump within 2000miles and did it again less than 1k later.
The brake servo packed up.
The gearbox (manual) always felt like stirring sand but apparently "they're all like that Sir"
The central locking wouldn't centrally lock whenever it felt like it.
Windows wouldn't wind up on various random occasions.
The tailgate lock broke, twice.
The wiper motor packed up
and on and on and on

Wish I could say the same for my 2001 model.
I hardly washed it for the first 5 years, Mercedes valet cars every time they are in for service.
I loose track of everything that has gone wrong. We are on the third tail gate, had new wings, new door skins.
New turbo, new manifolds... the list goes on.

My Jag has been like your Merc. Glad to hear you've been lucky there.

But the X-type was never really a proper Jag. It probably saved them from becomming extinct, but in a few years time the car will be quietly forgotten about.

These days Jags are soo much more then leather and walnut. In fact, they are very desirable cars.

Aye, to be fair I do know that Mercs of that era were not the best they ever made.
At one time I considered buying a V12 S class of about a 52 reg, did some reading up, discovered the sorts of issues you're seeing and decided I could do without bankruptcy.

And also to be fairer still, my Jag has been reasonably reliable of late (i.e. since Christmas) aside from a mysterious battery charge drain issue that was cured by taking out a fuse that didn't seem to peform any function that we could work out.

Hey ho. smile

Spoke to a guy last weekend with 04 XJ8. It only ever goes in for serving. My dad has an X308 and a similar story there.

On the other hand my 52 plate M3?? Now that's what I call fragile. £3k's worth of warranty work before it had 10k on the clock. Previous ti that, a 330ci & 328 ci were similar.

The current A4 is better, but still way from perfect given the supposed reputation.

Williamp, Did they let slip when in May?

Spoke to the dealer on Sat and she will let me use the XF demonstrator for the weekends I'm without a car. I ordered the XJ for delivery to coincide with me selling my present BMW.

On the topic of residuals I find the XF holds it's value really well and although I would like to think the new XJ might be the same I don't think it will, willing to take the chance though.

You're lucky you didn't buy a C Class Diesel smile

Done 50k miles in my S Type R and one of the reason why it's staying is because it has been utterly reliable.

Nothing to do with Jaguar, more like some software geeks. With Toyota in mind, maybe it's time they started taking out some of the arty-farty oh-so-clever software and replacing it with nice strong metal bars and dials...

They are in the dealers now, certainly Ipswich has them. About 100 cars currently available at the factory.Software glitches now sorted.I`m looking forward to seeing one in the flesh next week.I`m not sure about the styling probably because I`m around more historic stuff daily.Importantly , the factory tell me the XFR is flying away, with red horses and general german st being chopped in at the dealers. Now that IS the sign of a great car.
I don`t believe the Jaguar range is `cack` ,far from it.The number of X, S and XKs around with 100k plus miles speaks volumes for the product.I see enough of them to have a synical opinion .I have been known to be! I am warming to change. One point is they are superb value for money.

RW,

Are the dealers releasing them to customers next week?
