A message saying "Parkbrake fault" appeared and the gearshift would not come out of Park. I could release it temporarily by moving a small lever under the cover around the gearshift but the shift jammed again as soon as put in Park. I tried clearing the problem by disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes and on reconnection messages now alternate , saying "Apply foot and parkbrake" and"Cannot apply parkbrake". AND the Parkbrake now appears jammed on and I cannot move the car. Have tried releasing the Parkbrake by depressing the switch while withdrawing the ignition key, as per the handbook, but no joy. Suggestions please.

Just checked- yes the brake lights do come on. In fact a new switch was installed by a dealer a short while ago.

A colleagues car did this, 25 (how many times it failed and was fixed) trips to the dealer later after having everything to do with the handbrake replaced including the ECU and wiring. It was always fixed, just temporarily.

Hope you have more luck. I think the Battery was replaced too.
