Hi everyone,

long time BMW owner and prospective XF owner here.

I tend to keep my cars for a long period (5+ years, sometimes 10) and rack up the mileage well past 100,000.

I appreciate XFs are relatively new, however, has anybody experienced a high mileage XF? I would be interested in what you found and any areas to look out for.

I'm thinking of a V6 petrol or possibly a diesel.

Some of the Xfs have experienced gearchange module problems,locking the car in Park. All handled under warranty at present , but worth considering for the future.Great product, worthy of the badge and good for higher mileages only on good quality fuel.Skip the servicing intervals and introduce and extra oil change between servicing.

The mechanics are very similar to the S-Type, and they seem to be capable of big mileages. I'd change the gearbox oil at 50k or so (same with any BMW or other automatic) and make sure you give it full beans to try and avoid EGR and turbo vane problems.

Not a lot to add to what Dave has said, basically an S type underneath so has the same strengths and weaknesses.

My S-Type 4.2 V8 is nearing 6 years old and has done about 93,000 miles. I got it as a demo car with 14 miles on the clock and regard it as a long term keeper. In general it's been a good car but thank God for the warranty. By far the major issue was gearbox related (I'm on the fourth box now, but it's been good for over 30,000 miles now and all seems well with it). I've had the rear wheel bearings replaced, and had a new heater matrix too. I also had a piece of rear suspension replaced. All in all, I'm content with how the car is doing but I am glad I have extended the warranty despite its fairly high cost. I have no plans to dispose of the car.

From my experience with S-Types they can start getting 'excessive play' in suspension components after 100K miles (MOT fail) - and as you naturally can't just buy the 4p washer/bush, you need a whole new chunk of suspension at £100-£300 depending on the chunk required.

Those major components, such as rear arms on S types ( expensive generally) are often now on reduced pricing with dealers. Worth checking..

Cheers chaps.

Thinking of a two year old approved used and then extending the warranty every year.

The only downside is that it would be a 2008 car and so one of the first from the production line. Normally an absolute no no.

I've had my early X300 (XJ6) for over 14 years, it was originally registered in Nov94 which is the release date. Its been the best and most reliable car I've ever owned. I don't think there are any hard and fast rules about when you'll get a good one or a bad one with any make.

Spot on! I needed two chunks, well one a fail and one a 'may as well do it as the same time', and Jaguar had reduced them from £300 to £100 per chunk. Triangular thing with knobs on. It's very nice of them: seeing as they have you over a barrel they could have kept it the same price.
