I've currently got a 07 Boxster S, which I'm thinking of selling because it's somewhat wasted on me nowadays (when I do use it, say once a fortnight, my driving is made up of central london traffic and then a 100 mile trip down the motorway).

Anyway, I've hankered after an XJR8 for a while (check my previous posts over the years). And I'm familiar with timing chain + nikasil issues.

I guess there is a lot of rubbish out there, that'll cost a fortune in first year maintenance. I was just wondering, how much would it cost to get a "sorted" one that hasn't been to the moon and back? Is £4k a bit on the light side?

I was offered a very clean Maroon one for £3.5k from a jag specialist in Stanmore. It is probably still available and is not being advertised if you want to take a look at it.

I'm into the XKRs but would think you should find a XJR in that price

That's very interesting Hedders. Do you recall details (year, mileage etc?) Thanks

Fraid not but i can PM his number to you if you want to see if he still even has it. Even if he does not have that car he is likely to be the man to speak too.

I assume you have checked the PH classifieds - there are a few on there. I was going to offer you mine until I got to the 4k part of your post! Mine is 2002 48k miles, I got it through Autotrader.co.uk and have not had any problem with it in three years. I would hope for around £7k

Yes, I'd looked at PH, but I was keen to get a feeling of how much it cost for a clean xjr....

Mine is advertised on here at the moment, a '98 in Carnival Red. I can honestly say that I looked at loads before I bought mine & it was the cleanest one I saw bar non. Still drives superbly at 138k miles with FJSH & almost unmarked interior & has NO faults.

Very reluctant sale but I can't afford to run 2 cars.

4K should find you a nice car. I recently bought a 98 XJR for 4K, 92000 miles, FSH, tensioners done, two recent compression tests done and passed, unmarked exterior and interior, new tyres...so far so good!

S6 - how are you finding owning a 12yr old car?

I haven't been in an XJ8 for years. One of my concerns is that it'll be a lot older/more tired that I remember it being... Do people think the x308 has aged relatively well (I think the exterior still looks fab)

It really doesn't feel like a 12 year old car. The exterior is classy and stylish, the interior is nearly as new and still very stylish, I don't really feel it has aged at all! The previous owner named it the Diplomat and I can completely understand why..I love it!

Lovely cars, bought mine a couple of months ago for £3150. 1999 with 107k miles and full service history. Has a recently reconditioned gearbox still under warranty. All was well for the first 1000 miles or so, but have now spent over £2k chasing and repairing coolant system/head gasket issues, of which there were no evidence at point of (private) purchase. I only bought it as a stop gap, now I feel like I need to keep it a while to get some motoring out of it! Just thought I would add my cautionary tale to all the happy ones, but I can't wait for the garage to call and say it's ready! As with any bargain barge, leave some funds in reserve, just in case!
