Where do fellow XJR drivers see the coolant temperature needle pointing in normal driving with a warmed up engine.

In town traffic with lots of STOP and not much GO, I get a reading about half way between Cold and Hot.

On a motorway / dual carriage way at normal XJR cruising speeds, I get a reading which is nearer to a quarter way up from Cold.

Is this similar to others' experience, or is mine running a bit on the cool side?

Cheers
Peter

Sounds like your thermostat could be dodgy, cheap as chips and dead easy.

When my XJR is warm it sticks at half way and stays there irrespective of motorways or town driving.

Hi Drummerboy
Thanks for your reply. I too have considered it a possibility that the thermostat is not working. Possibly sticking open, giving too much cooling in fast driving conditions with high airflow through the rad. As you say, easy to replace or even test the thermostat.

Where abouts does your temperature needle sit under the two conditions described?

cheers
Peter

Cheers TheD

That's what I would have expected. I'm going to look into it this weekend.

Not an XJR but on my XJ8 it just sits bang on the middle whatever the car is doing.

Enjoy the car by the way smile

I had this on my old X308, fine in slow traffic, but in the 'cold' section when going fast, with also a drop in cabin temp.
I renewed the thermostat and flushed out the cooling system whislt at it, and it cured the problem smile

Thanks folk, this pretty much what I thought would be the case. Ordered a 'stat today.

BTW was disappointed that my local Jag dealer parts dept is closed on Saturdays. My usual independent motor parts shop gets the business again...

Fitted new 'stat.

Engine warms up to mid point within a 2-3 miles. Nice toasty hot and consistent heater output too - very welcome now the weather has taken a cold turn.

Of course with that much quicker warm up I can look forward to SUPERB fuel economy tongue outrolleyes

Cheers now

Peter
