All,

My (new to me) 2005 X Type Estate has the most intensely scratched windscreen I think I've ever seen. I'm not sure what the previous owner did to it, but I'd hazard a guess they scraped ice off it with a CD case or something equally well designed for NOT doing the job.

Driving it in bright sunlight or at night when oncoming vehicles have their lights on, is not a particularly pleasant experience - which is a shame, as I really like the car. I'm seriously considering replacing the windscreen, but can't find any prices anywhere. Yes, I can call one of the big firms (and probably will tomorrow am), but I'm at work now and wondered if anybody had done the same.

So, any ideas how much a new windscreen will cost? I don't think it's heated, so is just a chunk of X type shaped glass.

When I get round to getting the replacement down, I'm guessing Autoglass / Autoglazing etc etc is the way to go?

Thanks chaps.

Just replaced a Saab 9-5 windscreen for £180. I used 'Premier windscreens' or something like that.

Interesting - looks like it'll be less than £200 then. Thanks very much, I genuinely had no idea at all how much it might be.

Cheers - have a good weekend all.

I had my worn out windscreen on my C-class replaced for £158. Was by a "local" glass co.

Autoglass's best quote was over 400 with warnings of poor quality glass from cheap places. Merc dealer was over 500! When I pressed them on whether it was genuine NN glass and did they fit it themselves, they told me they sublet to Autoglass.

So I asked my local guy about the quality of his glass. He buys it as a part from..... Autoglass!

My perception of the problem in this business is that people don't worry about the price as they are "encouraged", as I was, to claim on my insurance. This pushes up insurance costs and therefore premiums. But beware! On my last round of insurance quotes I was asked if I'd had any claims, INCLUDING glass claims.

I was very happy to pay the local guy's price which seemed good value.

"all it will cost is the excess" ...... and your claims history and the general cost of premiums to all motorists.

A friend recently had his 318 'screen replaced with a new one. £115, including fitting (which shows that glass cover isn't that much of a perk). Windscreen companies will quote a recommended price, but if you ask them for discount, they will be able to sort something for you.

Autoglass went to great length to tell me their quote included insurance discount, branch discount and if I took it to their depot a further £12 off.

Fat cat margin structure.

A professionally fitted new windscreen is not as pricey as you might expect, but you have to ask why the cheap quotes are so low.

Hmmm, interesting repsonses chaps.

I spoke to Autoglass, and they quoted £493 if I paid for it myself. I don't really want to claim on insurance - it's a point of principle for me, really.

Interestingly, Autoglass did encourage me to claim on my insurance by saying it's "only £70-odd for the excess", and "9/10 claims are authorised" without rigorous checks.

Sounds as though I ought to shop around a bit and maybe find a local firm (which I'd prefer anyway). I don't mind paying up to £200, but nearly £500 is a bit steep. After all, it's scratched not cracked. I just prefer a really sharp, clean windscreen. It's not dangerous.

New windscreen fitted last week by Glassman - what a top bloke! I would recommend him to anybody on here. He turned up on time, did an impeccable job, and talked me through the entire process. Substantially less £ than the big nationals, too.

Paul - thanks for your hard work. Sorry the windscreen proved so tricky, and thanks for answering all my questions.

I've had two windscreens in two years (both cracks) - £70 each and no effect on claims history/premium.
Over the years I've paid many thousands for insurance and never had a claim, so had no qualms getting a bit back. It's what it's for.

I asked my insurer if the passing of time and a screen that was almost opaque with the accumulation of stones and gravel over the years made it eligible for a claim. They replied yes and so all I paid was the excess. If I am right, you don't even have to contact your insurer first now but give Autoglass a ring, they come along and change it, asking for your insurance certificate for proof of cover.

You are Gavin AICMFP

But you can call whoever YOU prefer, not who your insurer has a deal with (STTC in some cases)
