Starting issues

Ok so tuesday morning i went out and thought oh flat battery, bugger. so got the old leads out and connected it to the wifes car, still nothing. got the AA out and they couldnt jump it either. tow started it fine, charged battery and a good drive, drove fine.
came out again this morning nothing, loads of power in battery etc, lights dont even dim when trying to start, just its not turning over. starter sounds like its trying to turn it over but nothing?
is there a known starter issue?

oh its a squeezal diesel.

If it was my beetle I would of had it fixed in minutes! No this is my Jag xType 2.0 estate
