delay going into drive s-type 3.0lt v6 2001

No it is not normal. The oil level is probably low. Check the connection between the transmission cooler pipes and hoses up front by the radiator and make sure there are no leaks there. Oil goes in through a plug on the rear cover. It really needs to be done on a ramp because the transmission uses a weir type level setting plug - and this is the best way of keeping the car raised and level.
If I remember correctly the transmission oil needs to be checked at 40 celcius and no more - additionally the transmission should have been put into D & R moments before checking the level to prime the hydraulic circuits and the engine left idling. Then the weir plug is removed and transmission fluid pumped through the rear plug, once enough fluid is in the weir plug will start to have transmission fluid coming out in a stream, once you see the first drip put the weir plug in, then the rear plug.
If that doesn't do the trick then it will require a trip to a specialist for diagnosis.
