Hi mate has just got an x type 2.0d saloon from his father, but it needs at least 2 tyres 225 45 17 on research it appears that the std fitment are pirrelli with a J marking for jaguar . Our question is considering the premium charged for these is it not possible and safe to fit a normal tyre of the correct size and speed rating . I had the same as I remember on my s type but took little notice as it was a company car. We have found camskill have continentals for £135 with the magic j mark but is it really necessary given its just a diesel saloon ?
many thanks

J marked rolleyes Provided you fit the correct size , speed rating and sidewall strength or better you will be fine. I think it is just a ploy as part of the disciount deal to the manufacturer to make more money on replacements.

I agree with P700DEE

When I was looking to change the make of tyres on my XKR I was given all the Bull about staying with Jaguar's recommendations

One of my best decisions was to change

Agreed, but is there a warranty issue perhaps if you some problem with steering or suspension and the dealer says 'Aha but you're not using J tyres, sling yer hook sonny'?

I agree too. Jaguar - and all other manufacturers - have a vested interest in fitting tyres to a new car that reduces the cost of ownership and potential warranty claims whilst the car is under warranty. As most new cars here in the UK are bought by company accountants this usually means the first three years or 60000 miles will have every penny of running costs scrutinised. So, if a particular make of tyres lasts, say 5000 miles longer than any other, or the factory has done a deal on the next two million, then that'll be what's on the car - regardless of other virtues it may be lacking in.

I believe that's one reason why the Pirelli P6000 is frequently condemmed as rubbish - it's manufactured to last a long time and because of that it compromises other areas such as grip - hence the Ditchfinder nickname.

As already said choose a premium brand - Continental and Mitchelin came out best in a recent Auto Express test - shop around, have a look on the Pneues online or Black Circles sites for reviews and don't worry about buying J marked tyres for a Jaguar - it's a bit of a con IMHO

when I bought my x type 4 yrs ago from a main jaguar stealer ,it needed 2 front tyres ,part of the deal was 2 tyres and full Jaguar warranty for a year

Those 2 front tyres don't have the J mark ,main dealer had them fitted so can't see why there should be a problem

the J mark signifies a slightly softer side wall for more comfort I was told by the man in local ats

blackcircles say :- The X type benefits from being well equipped and has excellent drive and road holding characteristics. The tyres for this car are specially designed by Pirelli and carry a J mark to identify this. These tyres are suited to the particular characteristics of the Jaguar’s suspension settings.

I got my Jag X from Stratstone Jaguar in Luton, I don't have special J tyres for it. You've probably got your tyres now, but you can buy any brand that will fit. I have Falken FK452's and they are good tyres. I think someone mentioned Camskill? Thats where I looked for mine.

+1 for Falkens on the X-type. Ride, handling, grip & noise all unchanged from the pirelli's & for half the price. Plus my front pirelli's only lasted 7500mls (2.2d).
