Decommissioning
Discussion
Hi,
I am seriously looking at the option of taking my 98 XJR off the road for a few years, possibly longer.
I don't want to sell it as its special to me with all the modifications and its only got 60k on it. I sold another car off previously and I still regret it. Having sunk £9k into it and not having enjoyed the car properly it is possibly a good idea.
Young family etc; etc; just don't get the time to drive it and I am not just gonna give it away....we've all been here !
I have a brick garage and am thinking of a "Carcoon" and will by some scrap tyres to put on the wheels. It has 4 brand new ones on it at the moment.
What does it involve to decommission the car for up to 10 years maybe ?
All the oils / filters are new, including diff, engine, brake fluids, power steering and there is a new induction kit on the car, there is a new supercharger on it with new oil, all belts and chains and water pump is new. In fact there is stacks of new stuff on the car !
Can anyone advise on this please ?

Just keep driving it! Even if it becomes occasional use or seasonal use.
Not driving it for 10 years will introduce all manner of potential problems with the car.
Who knows what could happen in that time to you, your health, wealth, family, etc... And for sure petrol will not be any cheaper relative to everything else!
Drive and enjoy!

The Rust Beatle has already got a hold, when you return to it in ten years time you won't find a usable car there
I´m with 6speed on this. I bought my E type 21 years ago and until 3 years ago I was working in Asia and only got to drive it once a year for 2/3 weeks, always had problems and never ran well. Since I retired the car gets driven every weekend and has progressively got better and better to drive
60000 miles?
Keep using it, Don't Carcoon it, just look after it, mileage isn't low enough to worry about it creeping up. What colour, Brembos?
Edited: seen the pics, remove that spoiler, will only aid the tin worm. Your model is not desirable enough to warrant what you want to do. If mileage was half that ad it was perhaps full up spec wise on perhaps a 2000/51 plate then perhaps worth it

My heart is telling me that I should use the car, it is just difficult and not always practical !
Gonna sleep on it for a while.
If I sell someone will get something really special, but we all think that about our cars.
Bloody hell !!!! If it was a bird she'd have gone months ago !
Not sure what you mean about the spoiler. The car has two, one on the boot lip and one on top of the rear window, neither of which have been drilled.
They have been put on with masterseal wet on wet from Wayside adhesives, if they come off the boot lid is coming with it. Recommend this stuff..
For Information this is what it's had / got. This is not an indication of my selling it and looking for a price.

6k on a good day, should have left it without the spoilers.
I'd agree, however I have seen them fetch closer to 5 figures if someone really wants one. Very nice car don't get me wrong. If your attached to it, then don't sell it. Do another 50000 miles and get your moneys worthEdited by Markymark69 on Thursday 6th January 21:20
Why not keep it in a carcoon anyway...? Carcoon with a silica crystal dehumidifier inside (eg: Amber Dry / Ruby Dry) and the condensation tube leading out to a suitable drain and a big sock full of silica crystals (use silica cat litter) inside the car to keep the mould away.
Takes all of half an hour to wash and throughly dry the car after a run and it'll stay nice forever. Small price to pay for keepign the car in great condition yet still allowing access for occasional use.
I do this for my old Ford and despite occasional use it still looks better than the day it left the factory...

OK, Slept on this one, I am keeping the car and going to make efforts to run it more often.
As for the comments on the spoilers, get over it !
Keep calm, i dont care what spoilers you put on it, i only commented because you asked what it was worth and spoilers restrict your audience. As for the comments on the spoilers, get over it !
