My 1999 XJR has just been SORN'd and I am about to sell it, but the remote has just stopped functioning. I was going to take it into the dealers (the remote), but do I need to take the car with it to enable them to check it? I have tried changing the batteries, but sadly it doesn't work. I think it's the remote as opposed to the locking, as I can't switch the lights on with it either. How much is all this likely to cost me on top of my recent head gasket? It's been a pricey temporary car, but after buying someone elses problems from ebay banghead, at least the next owner shouldn't have any nasty surprises! I just don't want to put it up for sale without the remote working.

Sounds like it's worth trying to reprograme the remote.

Firstly prise it apart and remove the batteries, then carefully unclip the pcb and lift it out. Clean the backs of the pushbuttons and the corresponding contact pads on the pcb with some nail varnish remover, IPA or contact cleaner. Put it back together.

Then do this:

Hold the headlight flasher back and turn the key to position 1
Flash the headlights 4 times
The alarm will honk and the security LED on the J gate will start flashing
Programme each transmitter by pressing the lock or unlock button
Tha alarm will honk when you press the button to confirm it's reading the transmitter
Tha alarm must honk 5 times to complete the programming. If you only have one transmitter then press the button a total of 5 times, if you have two then 3 pushes on one and two on the other is needed.

Thanks Steve, I'll give that a try.
