Before I start, I'll just say that yes I appreciate this is the Jag forum, so there may be a slight bias on the answers But here we go anyway:
So, I currently have a XF 3Ltr DS Portfolio and it is lovely!
But after having a heart to heart with the domestic banker, I can't truely justify having so much capital tied up in a car (its fully paid off so no finance) So worst case scenario and I sell the car to a dealer, we've been offered £35K, she whom must be obeyed has asked for £15k of that to clear remaining houshold debts ( which is fair) So that leaves me with £20K and I've been told I can do whatever I want with that!
Realistically I can nudge that upto £25 as I have some funds squirrelled away, so with a budget of £25 max I've been perusing and have come down to two choices:
Firstly, my childhood dream a TVR, for £20K I can get a lovely Mk1 Tuscan with an engine rebuild still covered by a 4 yr warranty. Tuscans are a real head turner and I am certainly one for the limelight.
Secondly, Spires were doing some work on my XF, they had their XKRS down and I immediately fell in love. The Car looked stunning and the sound was fantastic, best of all it felt the same as sitting in my XF.
So this is where I currently sit, if I get an XK it'll have to be the R as I am a bit of a speed freak and think I'll need that supercharger, saying that I havent had the opportunity to compare them yet. I've seen a couple of 06 XKR's coming close to the £25 mark and I would imagine a few more will be in the next few months. As far as I'm aware the XK's are pretty bullet proof and capable of piling on the miles with ease, also I'm under the impression that it can be used all year round with relative ease.
Downside is they seem to be depreciating at an alarming rate. Anyone have any idea where the plateau for the residual will likely end up? I would hate to spend £25k now and have a car that will be worth a couple of grand 3 yrs or so down the line.
The TVR has more or less levelled out now and shouldn't go much below £15k, but then there are the potential running costs, some owners have spent in excess of £5k in a year, others have spent less than £100! The Jag appears to have relative low running costs bar road tax. The TVR won't handle half as well as the Jag, but the Jag won't have half the theatre of the TVR. Personally, I think the TVR would grab a lot more attention than the Jag, but then again I wouldn't be able to use the TVR for half the year, so would need another car as a runaround for those white days, whereas the Jag with the correct rubber would be at least capable.
So, as owners on a Jaguar forum, what are your thoughts?

Hi, I've had an XJ8 and a Tuscan.
My first reaction on seeing the thread title was that these 2 cars are so different, I was surprised anyone would consider them alternatives?
So my suggestion is try and get some decent drives in Tuscans, and decide if they are for you?
IMHO, the Tuscan is a cross between a very hard and focused sports car, and a kit car built in Blackpool, with all the compromises that implies. If you fall in love with the rawness of the driving experience, nothing else will do! and you can get a comfy daily driver alongside it, with a few toys, for when you just want a quiet trundle. Servicing will not come round so often, with the miles on the daily. The suspension will often be upgraded by now, if it has been owned by an enthusiast you may be surprised buy what a competent driver's car it can be.
If you look at the Tuscan, and you think "Looks / sounds great, wish they made an auto", you will be happier with the Jag, in the long run.

As you deciding between an XJR and a Tuscan I take it you only require two seats, maybe two and two halves.
Why not go for an XKR then, there is a lot that can now be done to them to not make as a Sports car but help with the power (if you want even more) and handling

The 2 cars are totally different.
The Tiv is raw where the Jag is refined. If you want one you probably don't want the other. Both are great cars. If you go down the Tuscan route I would go for a T2 as the changes to steering and suspension make them less "dramatic" to drive fast, but both are brilliant cars. I'd squeeze out 30k, buy a T2 for 25k and spend the other 5k on an XJ8 or early XK8 for relaxed cruising.

My father in law has an '09 XKR convertable. Lovely thing. He had it dyno'd the other day, and it showed 526bhp at 80% throttle. Very impressive. I bet it would be quicker then the Tuscan too. And more civilised.

Yes I have to agree with that. I love the Tuscan but as an everyday car, I couldn't live with it. The Jag, whichever model you choose is so much more civilised for daily use. The Tuscan is balls out fun on high days and holidays but everyday it's a no no for me.The Tuscan is too focused and the novelty will soon wear off if you're using it every day.

I went on long trips to France and all around the UK in my Tuscans and my Sagaris and they were perfectly comfortable, even in the rain. The most frustrating thing about commuting in them would be the warming up which can take 10 miles on a cold day. But who wants to commute anyway, sounds like a dreary waste of time..

Ah, I was indeed thinking of a very loud Griff, with no power steering and just a barbed-wire shirt to keep one's hairy chest warm... Given the choice I'd go for the Jag for every day use. After running a XK8 and a Griff for a few years I still feel more certain of getting to my destination in the Jag-although I have not had any faults with the Tiv. The Jag just feels better put together, the Tiv always has something to stick back into place. If it were a choice for a weekend car the Tuscan would win, more craic and better depreciation.
Hmm very difficult i run a jag sovereign as a daily driver quiet,comfortable & quick & i love the new XKR still bloody quick & comfortable & as an everyday choice it would have to be the XKR but i think my Tuscan will outrun it particularly on power to weight particularly on the twisty stuff. As previously said the Tuscan is quite comfortable & a fantastic drivers car but to drive it daily you might as well rip your licence up but after a bad day go for a spin & come back with a big smile but you have to be rigorous with trhe engine warm up & for daily use would suggest you fit a pre oiler
