As per title, thinking of buying an X-Type estate to run around in, can anyone give me real world advice on reliability, what they are like to chug around in etc please?

Are there many option levels? what is the version with the best spec?

many thanks in advance smile

Google DMF failure and EGR problems. Not unique to the Jag , common fault with a lot of manufacturers but it pays to be well informed before buying.

I have the model you seek in sport guise , ok on the whole , some nice Jag touches but it can't escape the Mondeo underpinnings no matter what others tell you. Not necessarily a negative as the Mondeo is not at all bad

The model to go for is the Sport Premium

The later 2.2 models also fitted with a DPF , yet another emission control device that can add £££ onto running / repair costs a few years down the line

The standard Halogen headlights are not the best either , getting the HID / Xenon equipped one will be a bonus.

The tailgate glass can open independently from the main tailgate , they are prone to popping the glass part open when you least expect it , especially on start up , there are ways around it but it's cheaper and more reassuring in the long run to disable the feature

I have a 55 plate 2.0D Estate in SE spec. I don't find it the most refined car at idle speed and especially when cold. Modern diesels seem to be quieter. I'm averaging around 43-44mpg at the moment which isn't bad.

The range goes from Classic, S, Sport, SE, Sport Premium, Sovereign.

Take a look at the forums at www.jaguarforum.co.uk. They have the full spec lists as a sticky in the x-type forum.

As the above poster states, EGR issues are common, but there is a DIY fix posted on the forum above. Also the tailgate glass issue is one of the most irritating faults you'll come across in any car! Get in car, close door, fasten seatbelt, start engine and the tailgate pops open! I've disconnected my switch until I can get it fixed.
I don't agree that you "can't escape the Mondeo underpinnings". The majority of the interior is bespoke Jaguar. There is very little to remind you that it's loosely based on the Mondeo.

I'm happy with the performance of the 2.0 engine, though I didn't buy it with performance driving in mind! I've never driven a 2.2, though the 6th gear could come in useful on the motorway. 5th in the 2.0 isn't quite as long as I thought it would be, about 2300rpm at 70mph.

I've got a 2.2d estate sport premium & its the best made Jag i've had & i've had a few.

Tailgate glass issue is easily fixed with a new 60quid switch or strip the old one, dry the water out & re-assemble with silicone grease.

I've run X-types for 6 years & never had a big bill yet "touching wood".

I've got an '04 Plated 2l TDCi Sports Estate and echo the DMF failure (had that "go" at only 54,000 miles = £1800 at the stealers)

Also had the Cam Sensor let go - known issue on certain vintage TDCi engines, £18 for a new one from the factors (old ones are BLACK, the updated ones are GREY), about 20 mins to self fit (with a 8mm socket spanner and a little swearing)

My car eats the Pirelli P Zero Rosso tyres for breakfast (I get about 14-18 months use out of them - and I don't drive it hard) but they're not too bad at the local tyre place £120 inc VAT and fitting. My insurance states that I must use "Manufacturer approved tyres" so I've not changed them to something else as Jag only allow the P Zeros on my Aruba Premium Rims (be careful of the Aruba Rims, there are 2 types the Std which is all one colour and the "Premium" - which are 2 tone) the std ones are prone to buckling if abused with pot holes, the Premiums are "forged" and more sturdy, but are £600/corner....

On a good long steady motor way / A roads, I managed 550 miles with a brimmed tank before i chickened out and filled up (with 32miles left acording to the computer) general driving normally gets to 480.

Think that's about it
