Jaguar Leapers
Discussion
Trying to gauge interest in leapers that a friend of mine can produce to OEM levels of durability and finish. I will have some pictures of them on Monday but needless to say they created a fair bit of interest when I displayed them at the Sunday service at Gaydon last Sunday. Anyway here is his technical blurb and a few photos.
These leapers are manufactured to oem standards by a UK based die caster and are road legal in terms of the required 'break off test'. Through a multi-stage colouring process applied to the zinc die-casting we are able to achieve stunning metallic effects that are unavailable on any other product of this type. The products will be sold, firstly as auto memorabilia paperweights, but then will be made available to retrofit to Jaguar cars.
Â
The colouring process was first established in the early 1990's where it passed simulated 10 year weathering tests, subsequently being used on thousands of growler badge for a number of years with no reported failure in the field. We are therefore, extremely confident in the quality and longevity of this product.'

Any colour is possible.I'll post some more pictures during next week.

You'll need to be careful, Jaguar have been getting stricter about enforcing ownership of their logos recently.
A couple of years back I bought a set of growler valve covers for my XJ, some bleeding hooligan made off with a couple of them. When the misses contacted SNG to get a replacement set she was told they couldn't get them any more as Jaguar had had them shut down.

Interesting. He is at Jaguar at the end of the month for a show of some kind. Perhaps he needs to have a chat with them before he goes far into it.A couple of years back I bought a set of growler valve covers for my XJ, some bleeding hooligan made off with a couple of them. Not sure what you mean by retrofit - cars that originally had them fitted or more recent cars.
If recent cars - I believe it is illegal to add mascots if not originally fitted.
Everything's illegal. The lorry drivers who exercised their right to freedom by protesting over fuel prices are not doing so now because they have been quietly 'approached' by Government officials who will close them down if they dare do it again. If recent cars - I believe it is illegal to add mascots if not originally fitted.
But people do fit Jaguars that did not oringally have leapers with bolt-on leapers. Personally I think the current designs don't suit it, but each to his own. Plod can't put everyone in jail.
I was in two minds when I bought my X308 to retro fit a leaper. In the end I decided it wasn't worth the potential hassle of being caught, plus I doubt it would add to the cars ambience. I've seen other 308's and S and even X types with them fitted and they just look odd.
The leapers on the MkII Jags, now they were something.

Most if not all of the S-Types, X-Types and pre 2010 XJ's sold here in the US had leapers. They really don't work on the new ones although we did put one on a 2010 XJ at the buyers request. It looked a bit odd... unrepentant said:

I take it they were spring mounted in order to come off in a crash? I believe here in the UK they were actually banned in the 80's, I'm not sure whether or not the retro spring ones are legal or not.
