2005 A4 Avant 2.0T FSI - Buying Advice?
Discussion
Hi all,
I'm looking at replacing my '99 528i Touring for a 2006 A4 Avant - the 2.0T FSI SE with a manual 6spd box.
I test drove one recently with 40k on the clock and found it a tad noisier than my 528. Wind/road/engine noise (basically sound proofing)
Pickup was pleasant and the engine is torquey enough and very responsive. Climbed through the revs fine. No sign of smoke out the back at any point.
Power steering is probably a little excessive - very light with less feedback through it than the BM. Gear change was very good though.
However, the engine sounded a little top-end noisy - nothing serious - much like my VX200 which is known for being a tad noisy. Is this normal on these engines?
Are there any known issues with the model?
Is there anything specific to look out for?
Thanks in advance

I have the same engine in my 2005 A4. The FSI Turbo sounds like a diesel to be fair! More so at tick over. It sounds like your one is ok
Cambelt/water pump is recommended at 75K/5yrs. Earlier if you want to be cautious.
Had no issues in 18 months, bar a coil pack on the 2nd day of ownership. There is a 'recall' for all coil packs on these at any Audi Dealership, so check when you buy. It's a good freebie so you'll have the latest version.

Can only echo comments above; the 2.0T is slightly harsh but effective (it's even noisier in an A3 or Golf). If you're used to a 6 cylinder lump then any four is going to be a bit rough in comparison, the 2.0T is a lot of fun with cheap and readily available remap too. This doesn't cause any real reliability issues except the diverter valve but an uprated one from an S3 is only 45 quid.
Cars themselves are tough and with 40k miles I don't think you've anything to worry about.
To give you an idea, a 47k mile 06 saloon we just prepped had the following under its PDI:
front brake pads (40 quid)
1 parking sensor (70)
clutch pedal switch (8)
Absolutely free of any rattles or squeaks too.

Good to hear
I had similar reply on VWAF (recently discovered through another post in this section)
The cambelt has just been done which also raised additional concern as it's about 30k too early, but as it's 5 years or 75k - all good on that front too
May just call the dealer up and get a deposit down

Is premium unleaded recommended by Audi?
I understand the benefits of Super and will probably run with it, but surely if the car has been manufactured for the UK Market, it will manage with regular 95?
(unlike my Supercharged MR2 (MK1) imported from Japan which we had no choice but to run 98 or higher thanks to ECU mapping)

I tend to hover around Bucks/Middlesex and get 22-26 depending on traffic, 32 on the motorway but no better than that really (2.0T quattro manual). Full fat unleaded for best results please.
Ouch! I`ve a mate with a 330i (E46) touring and he betters those figures quite easily.I've had the use of a 2008 530i Sport Tourer (Auto) on a trip to Spa and back. All motorway and it averaged 26mpg on the journey (admittedly, we opened it up a tad once in Belgium
Another mate who had a 2006 330i Sport Touring (Auto) never got as much as 30 on average over a 2 year period. It was closer to the 25/26 mark from memory.
My 528i Touring (Manual) averages around 25.
I think it's largely down to how the car is driven and the type of traffic it's driven in. Also the Auto boxes are known to be less economical in traffic, which doesn't explain the long motorway results...
Ho hum....

I have the 2.0TFSI in a 55 plate multi tragic saloon (so fwd). As you're going for the manual I don't need to warn you off this hideous gearbox that's just cost me £4,000 to replace depite 37k miles and a FASH...
However I would recommend that you look at the S Line rather than the SE which really suits the Avant. Much nicer stance, big wheels fill the arches better and the whole thing looks really good. The SE looks a bit gawky in my view.
Engine is nice and torquy and pulls well but likes a drink and with the multitronic I get about 20 - 25 in town and low 30's on a good run. It's very fuel efficient on a low speed cruise as top is geared to c 40mph/1000 but any application of the loud pedal and the consumption rockets. And yes, it sounds like a bag of nails.
Apart from the bending over I had from the gearbox, nothing else has gone wrong with it apart from a few minor bits covered by the warranty.
Edited to add: Recently went for a drive in a colleague's '52 plate 530i Sport saloon (same shape as yours I think) and much preferred it to the A4. Better built, more comfortable, lovely engine, better handling... why do you want to change?
