Hi all, just after a bit of advice really...

We bought an A3 (petrol/manual) in late 2009 from an Audi main dealer with a 1 year warranty. Mechanically, the car had been fine until a couple of months back, when the gearbox started to make worrying noises both when the car was in gear, and when it was in neutral. Depressing the clutch pedal would make the noise go away. Fearing the worst, we took the car back to the main dealer, and sure enough, the outcome was that it needs a new gearbox at considerable cost. The mechanic assured us that the gearbox problem was not something that would have been caused by our driving, but was probably due to the age of the car. The car is a 2006 with 51k on the clock.

So my first question is... Has anybody else had to replace a gearbox on a similar age/spec car due to normal wear and tear? It seems a very short lifespan for a supposedly reliable car!

Secondly, does any one have any experience of how 'helpful' or otherwise Audi main dealers tend to be? We've been informed so far that there will be no 'goodwill gesture' on their part, which surprised me given the nature of the fault, and the cost to fix it. I realise that the car is out of warranty, and we're not looking for a freebie, but their uncompromising attitude isn't quite what I expected!

Thanks!

If its a chattering ratterling noise....

I'd bet all the money in the world its the duel mass flywheel.

The DMF smooths out pulses from the engine, when they are not being smoothed the gearbox makes loud ratterling sounds, which go away when the clutch is pressed. Catches everybody out as the noise comes from the gearbox so you would assume its the gearbox at fault.

If its a whining or bearing noise, disregard the above, the Gbox is faulty.

Goodwill is for cars up to 5 years old upto 100,000 miles (with full maindealer service history) if its 5 years and 1 day old, that is they wont budge. Contributions from audi vary from 5-10% up to 100% depending on the component that has failed.

Hi TT, is this with anything major on the car? Engine/Gearbox etc?

My A4 is 5 1/2 years old with a full Audi History so just wondering if it's worth going back to them.

Apologies for the minor hijack smile

TT, many thanks for the information - your description of the sound is pretty much spot on, although my better half is sure she can hear both noises! I think the car is just over 5 years hence the dealer stance - again, thanks for letting me know the Audi position!
