Running an RS6
Discussion
Been looking to replace my Audi A6 since it was written off. Was a 4.2 V8 but with LPG.
Cant help noticing the RS6's.
Whats the real world MPG like on these (2002-2004 cars) like? wont be used much around town, maybe a 10 min commute. Once or twice a week a 100mile round trip up the M27.
Im thinking 15ish maybe cracking 20 on the motorway at cruising speed?
Anyone had experience with these?

I've owned two RS6's, one from new in 2003, and 2nd hand 2004 version from 2007 to 2010. Done probably 100,000 miles in them in total. Spoilt me rotten too. I live in a rural area with some great roads that can be empty for miles at a time. But I also commute 50 miles day, and do the odd 300+ mile trip, and trips abroad.
In general day to day use, I used to get about 19mpg. On a motorway, cruise control on at 75-80 I would see 25mpg. Once in Germany I found out that it didnt have the electronic speed limiter too .. (verified by the GPS!). But … I tended to enjoy the turbo feeling a bit toooo much, and would sometimes belt across country for 10+ miles on familiar B roads without seeing a single car and get … 9mpg. Worst ever result was 140 miles from a tank full, but the car was airborne for most of it. Well, kinda. I was typically spending £4000-5000 a year on petrol, so be warned they aint cheap to run and if you want a cheap to run supercar, look elsewhere. Or give up !
As an all-round all-weather day to day driving machine bordering on supercar performance, with 4WD, there's little to touch it. And you can chuck a huge amount of 'stuff' in the back, and not worry to much about where its parked (I did remove the badges though..). And the best bit was neither of them ever left me stranded on the side of the road, and they did exactly what it says on the tin.. Servicing costs can be steep, but that’s if you allow yourself to be fleeced senseless by Audi dealers constantly trying to ensure your 7 yr old car is as good as new one. I personally never had any of the fabled DRC suspension issues either. I ended up with an independent expert RS6 place and their knowledge / advice / pricing was a revelation.
I would willingly have another RS6 (once its internals had been investigated for abuse). But … I am about to start driving around in something totally different to every previous car I've owned.

Thanks for that some handy stuff but I'd really like to know if there's a way to check these things on a test drive before I buy. Doubt I'd be able to get it checked at Audi before I have parted with my cash.I've had mine for 18 months now and it's not been as expensive as I was prepared for.
Had one service so far which wasn't too bad. Think it was about £400 for a 'basic' service at Audi, and around £800 ish for the other-type of service. From memory, reckon that it inter-changes from one to the other ... a cheap service followed by an expensive one etc etc...
Bar a set tyres (knew they needed replacing before I bought it) at about £1,200, I've only had to buy a new rear wiper blade.
I was careful to find one with a good service history (cam-belt service done, DRC replaced with coil-overs, gearbox service performed even though Audi say it's a sealed unit which needs no servicing).
Going to need new pads and discs on the front shortly and this will be around £1,200 - £1,400 mark.
Petrol... well, it's irrelevant. Yes, you can keep a track of mpg and think over the past 12 months I average 19mgp on M-way trips and B-road blasts.
Very rough rule of thumb is 250 miles per tank with mixed driving @ £100 per fill-up.
Find a good Audi forum for some better advice from people more helpful than me! RS246, AudiSRS are just two.
Chat to a specialist like MRC or Unit20 to name a couple. Think places like this will offer a pre-purchase inspection which could be the best £££ you ever spend to avoid picking up one with will sting you with big repair bills!

I bought one...
I was a bit non-plussed after the initial rush of adrenalin when buying mine, thinking it wasn't as special as everyone made out, but slowly over the next 2 weeks this car had got under my skin. It's a comfortable Audi estate with a nice muted burble that just happens to go like nothing else when you push it.
I use mine every day (around 80 miles per day) and i am averaging 18.3mpg over the last 2000 miles - that's cruising at 90mph (on a race track of course), more than a couple of bursts of accelaration and the rest standard town / B-road driving.
I can't see how i can improve upon this at the moment as i need to carry the family, the dog at time, enjoy my drive and not have something so conspicuous that i cant park it anywhere.
It's a slice of abolute magic and when i look at the Q7 or the RS6 keys there's no choice to be made - hence we sold the wife's car and i gave her the Q7.
