Hi- Last year my Audi R8 was making odd noises. Sounded like someone scraping a metal bar along concrete. I got Audi to replace the fans (it seemed worse when the fans cutin )& it stopped. Recently I've started to feel a vibration through the steering along with a loud vibrating growl. i've checked tyres & replaced them & its still there. Last night the metal noise re-appeared. I've taken it back to Audi to ask them to look at eit 7 to check if it could be the fans again but they are not taking that opinion seriously. Anyone out there experienced the same thing- and is anyone out there with a R8 as cheesed off as me at the number of faults it has?

Were you not able to replicate the fault for them?

Ideas = Could be the "power brake booster" or the hill hold assist coming on when it's not meant to? Otherwise some of the basics? Power Steering pump / rack, wheel bearings, stone in between brake discs and callipers, brakes binding on etc?

It hasn't been great on reliablility. My Noble was better! It first went into the garage on 600 miles because I couldn't turn the engine off (the day before I was supposed to be tracking it at Pembray!)& its been back several times since. Some silly things- aeriel died, window stopped working...but the problem seems to be the technicians- great on computers but not that knowledgeable on mechanics as far as I've experienced. Perhaps I've been unlucky as i'm sure an organisation like Audi know what they are doing.... Will look into some the suggestiosn so thanks

I'm guessing it's a new car and still under manufacturer warranty? If not can you find a decent indie? You tend to find proper mechanics then rather than computer technicians.
The R8, along with a Maser GT is something I'm looking at next year and was under the impression they were pretty reliable and bulletproof.

Taking it to an Audi dealer is the problem - I highly doubt they have been trained properly in looking after one - Most of them have trouble fixing A3's to a good standard so an R8 stands no chance of being repaired properly by one

I'd rather the R8 than a masserati for reliablilty but had been thinking of getting the spider when I trade this one in (it's 3yrs 2 mths old!!) Probably wont bother now. I think you're right about the dealers- maybe I should try elsewhere. When I took it in this time they made me commit to paying £150 to have diagnostics done. They refund it if you get the work done but if they dont find the fault......

Trouble is a grinding or scraping noise is likely to be mechanical so a diagnostic check is unlikely to reveal anything. This is where dealer techs will often scratch their head and state nothing is wrong than look for an obvious fault elsewhere.
As for the Maser, I've heard good things about the Granturismo but coming from a TVR TBH the odd niggle doesn't really scare me.... (too much anyway)

Most Audi dealers are not R8 centres. Find one of these and they will have a properly trained R8 tech

Not sure if this helps with the fan related noise, but my Gallardo could sometimes pick up gravel into the frontal area which would make one helluva noise on the cooling fans that are in there. As it shares some DNA with the R8 that could be worth checking?

Can anyone else confirm the R8 is an unreliable car?

I've had mine for 9 months and not a fault (touches wood)!! Feels much more solid than the Aston Vantage I had before it. Just an unlucky car, never heard of any majors issues myself, almost bullet proof!

I would agree with others comments on here thou' you must go to an R8 approved dealer as not all Audi Garages are equipped and trained to deal with them. I live near Watford and Audi Watford can service the car but Audi Amersham cannot!!

Oh I forgot! My son reversed in to it at the weekend .. It was parked at the time.
Just damaged the blade and inner blade so I can repair it myself as there's no body damage.
£1000 for a blade (£450) and inner blade (£325) +vat local workshop painting them both for me that's £300 .....Kids !!!!!
