Hi guys.

I have the option to pick up a limited edition Audi A4 1.8t quattro sport 180bhp at a good price off a mate.

It would be to replace my landrover as my daily driver but it would still only be doing ~6k miles a year so running costs are of no major concern.

Has anyone got any experience of these cars, what are their week points? Service costs etc?

This is the car in question

With it's dark rims which I prefer

May well be tempted to chip it. Have heard the power jumps to 220bhp+ with just a remap.

I ran one for a couple of years chap, really nice cars (but the dark wheels really don't work with the blue!).

Had mine from 95 to 110 and nothing serious went wrong, just old car stuff (all of these are fairly common).

Couple of cracked springs
Couple of top arms
Thermostat
Coolant temperature sender
Diverter valve
Down pipe flexi
Volume control on stereo

You won't see 220 from one without more work, B5s all run the K03 turbo (rather than the K03S in a Golf/A3) so a map will see you ~200 but the gain is worth it.

Thank you for the advice.

If I'd only see a 20bhp increase then I may pass on the chip unless it improves the mpg at all? This car doesn't need to set the world alight performance wise as I have my 200sx for that.

My friend did mention in the past that the car is slightly lower on the drivers side than the passenger side (I imagine this is due to the weight of the driver over the years??) could this be early signs that the coils are on their way out?
Is it worth getting after market springs for these at all? I wouldn't mind it being ~20mm lower than it currently sits purely for cosmetic reasons really.

Do Audi's of this age suffer from rust at all? My nissan which is of a similar age is showing signs of rust now which I will have to address soon frown

You can pick up a set of springs or even coilovers real cheap on ebay if you don't want to spend too much. Rust shouldn't be an issue as the bodywork on these is galvanised, Ive a 1996 A4 Sport 1.8turbo that's got the usual age related scrapes and dings but no rust. Here's mine lowered 10mm...

Looks good smile I've looked on ebay for spring kits yet it seems the quattro sport is different somehow from a 2wd a4? Not sure how though.

I'll have to have a test drive soon I think. Extremely happy to hear the chassis is galvanised biggrin

Eibach spring kit will give you a small drop and keep the ride sensible; one corner sagging is very likely to be a snapped coil spring. Exactly what mine did.

It's more one side than one corner that's lower but I'll factor in the price of some new springs. smile

Sorry to bump this. Can anyone tell me if these engines are good for high miles? The one I'm looking at is at ~130k. I'd imagine audi's can cope with this kind of mileage reasonably well but thought it would be prudent to double check smile

There are two terminal faults that kill 1.8Ts: snapped cam belts and clogged oil pump pickups. Change the belt when it's due. Whip the sump off to check for emulsified oil and change it every 10k.

At 130 you're laughing if the car's been regularly serviced.

Had my quattro sport from 16k and sold it last year at 125k. Fair chunk of those miles spent towing the Westfield and it never let me down other than a flat battery. Best car I've ever owned considering.

Regular oil changes, I ignored the long life service intervals and changed filters every 10k.
4 pairs of front discs
3 Pairs of rear discs which seem to corrode on the inside before the pads need changing
Exhaust flexy joint from cat to downpipe @ 100k
2 x batteries
3 x windscreens under insurance
New clutch @ 95k
Broken spring on rear @ 100k
Rear wheel bearing @ 70k

Engine had 1 noisy tappet if stuck in traffic and the paint was beginning to bubble slightly around the boot above the number plate.

No other problems of note other than usual audi stuff.... Dead pixels in driver display and erratic volume on the Bose stereo.

Sold mine last July at 207K, no evidence of a new turbo, gearbox or clutch, although the turbo and clutch were fked when I sold it!

It was a 2WD 150 Sport.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll go for it and see how I get on with it. I have a space where I can park my landrover for a while so if I change my mind I can always sell it on smile

Quite looking forward to having a decent daily driver again smile

A friend of ours has a 1997 1.8T A4. Last week the head gasket went and it's currently off the road.

First I've heard of a HG going on a 1.8T.

DrG is right you wont see 220 from the 180sport, 15-20bhp at best, but what does make a difference is how it delivers the powerr, the torque comes in much earlier and thats what makes it feel a lot quicker.

I suffeser the oil pickup in the sump going happened at 110k, the car had doen 40k in my ownership till that point with a remap on it before that failed. ultimately ate the turbo, depressing moment. We took of the feeders to the turbo which were virtually clogged. If i was buying a 1.8T again i would replace these as a matter of course.

Otherwise that sort of miles i wouldnt worry if its been well serviced, beware of service histoy holes, i didnt and it cost me ultiately.

Again thank you for the info, I like to be informed before I purchase a new car smile

I don't suppose anyone has any idea how long it would take a garage to swap the oil pick up in the sump? I don't fancy dropping the sump at home as it's always a pretty messy job, especially when your lying on your back on the drive frown

I'm sure TT will know labour time on that, I don't think there's much in the way on a B5.

Well I've bought it and should be picking it up wednesday. Thanks for the advise on here.

It needs a little tidying up as the front bumper is badly stone chipped and the rear door on the passenger side has lost some paint on it's leading edge also. Other than that it's good to go and drives like a dream smile

Let us know how you get on with it, I may have the option to pick up a really nice 1998 FWD one (I know the owner) with 48k yikes

Enjoy your new car!

I have one, and I have had 100's of cars over the years and I can honestly say its the most reliable car I have owned.
Mine is only a poverty spec 1995 1.6, but it drives well and never uses a drop of oil and water and I have only changed service items on my car.
Mine is rust free, and the only reason you would ever get any rust is if the car has been accident damaged at sometime.
The only problem I can find with mine is that I get bored quickly with cars and I can still see my A4 going in another 20 years lol.
