B7 RS4 Tyres: Switching from Pirelli - What are you running?
Discussion
Good evening everyone.
It's time again to change my tyres so have been getting some quotes for replacing my Pirelli P-Zeros.
Upon phoning the main dealer, they can't match a local tyre fitters price for four P-Zeros, however they can match the price if I switch brands.
They have come back to me with the offer of a price match for either a set of Dunlop Sport Max GT or Continental Sport Contact 3 in the usual 255/35/19 size.
I'm not adversed to switching tyre brands, however my Audi has always had the Pirellis in the OEM size.
I am happy with the price offered and the standard size.
Do you have any experience of the brands mentioned above?
I am, however, looking for performance feedback of these two different brands vs. my current Pirellis. How do they compare in the dry & wet?
Can they stand up well to the odd track day and high speed driving? (Not too long after purchase, I will be taking the car to Germany and Switzerland, you see
)
Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks in advance,
Darren

Hi Darren, been a while...must get over to a local meet soon. Can't help on any of those makes but my A6 uses the same size; I went from Michelin PS/2 to Vredesteins on that a while back and although the new ones have worn well, they aren't as sharp as the PS/2 in the corners. Knowing what you drive I'd be taking a keen look at the new Michelin Super Sport if it were me...that's meant to be an extremely good tyre; about £250 each online.

With that choice and knowing what(How) you drive, The Perelli will be better than Continental or Dunlop, Remember them 4 black bits in the corners are what stop you from not being here!!
Cant comment on Vredsteins on your car, but have had them on my blue car and they were as good as Pirelli which I have been running for a time now, but they did start to go off with less grip about 1000 miles before Pirelli do, Pirelli on mine manage 4000 miles and grip to nearly the end.
The other thing is make sure you go high enough up the speed rating on the tyres W minimum or Z
Dunlops (Sport Maxx) on our track car look to be having a much harder time of it than the Pirellis did; hard to describe but the rubber is peeling and I doubt they're long for this world. Towards the end of its last outing the car got very squirrely at the back end too.
Contis seriously impressed me and as above, a lot of customers have told me how pleased they've been with the Vredesteins. Avon (zz5) and Hankook (Ventus) have had very positive reviews lately (Evo) if you're looking for something a little lower priced.

Many thanks for the replies, everyone
Michelin SS have been mentioned, as have have Vredesteins. Aren't these those barely legal track-bias tyres? If so, I use the car in all weathers, so I'm looking for a tyre which will cope well with wet weather driving.
My P-Zeros have give me the confidence to push on in damp and wet conditions
Going by what has been said so far, tyre choice seems very personal to the driver, so I perhaps a "try it and see" approach may be worth while?

Thanks again, thus far

My A6 runs the Vreds in that size, they are miles better than the OEM Pirelli's, and better than the Dunlops it had before. I am on the second set of Vreds.
Pirellis went off much sooner and lasted a good 5k fewer miles. Pirellis slightly better in the dry, vreds much better the rest of the time. Vreds take about 100 miles to bed in, they are very slippery for the first 50-100 miles.

I'm running pzero rossos on my RS4, but I'll be changing them to Vreds next time around. Drove a friends RS4 on Vreds and they seemed 98% of what the Pirrelis do at the upper limits, but are at 60% of the price
I don't use the car on the track, so that last 2% is largely irrelevant for my driving style

I use FK452's and have done for ages, great all round tyre, the only down side is slightly elevated road noise.

Not an RS4 (yet) but I've got the Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas on my Leon Cupra R. They're not a track tyre as such, they're a road tyre but a very good one IMHO. I'm on my second set now, wet and dry grip is great, feedback is very good, road noise is low. I got about 17k out of my first set (fronts), mostly fairly spirited driving. I'd use these again on pretty much anything they come in the correct fitment for. Tread pattern is funky too
